ITV Racing tips 5 August 2017 - Race-by-race selections for Saturday's live TV coverage of Goodwood and Newmarket

The ITV Racing team continue their coverage of Glorious Goodwood on Saturday with four live TV races, while Newmarket also comes under the TV camera's spotlight.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for the day's live TV horse racing coverage of the best of the action from Saturday's cards at Goodwood and Newmarket.

Saturday sees the continuation of ITV Racing’s coverage of Glorious Goodwood, and Ed Chamberlain and the team will again have the best of the action from the Sussex venue as the summer highlight draws to its’ conclusion.

The team will have four races live from Goodwood on Saturday afternoon, while two races from the meeting at Newmarket also joins the televised lineup of racing action across the afternoon.

2:05 Newmarket (July) - British Stallion Studs EBF Chalice Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m4f ITV
2:25 Goodwood - Qatar Summer Handicap Cl2 (3yo+) 1m6f ITV
2:40 Newmarket (July) - British EBF Fillies' Nursery Handicap Cl2 (2yo) 6f ITV

3:35 Goodwood - Qatar Stewards' Cup Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV

On another busy afternoon of horse racing action across the country, Brian Healy gives his race-by-race tips for Saturday’s live TV coverage of Goodwood and Newmarket where they race on the July Course.

1:50 Goodwood - Qatar Stewards' Sprint Handicap (Consolation Race For The Qatar Stewards' Cup) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV

Saturday’s live TV coverage of the final day of Glorious Goodwood begins with the consolation race for the Stewards’ Cup, and the six furlong dash should provide an early indication regarding the best of the draw.

MANSHOOD (12/1, William Hill) is drawn high and could be the one to side with to follow up his win last time out at Hamilton - assuming of course that he races in the preferred part of the course.

He he ran out a two lengths winner over Inexes in that success nort of the border, but Paul Midgeley’s charge had earlier racked up a trio of runner-up efforts, beaten a half-length or less on all three of those starts prior to his win.

Penalised for that win which sees him upped in class for this contest, he remains a progressive and lightly-raced sort who could have further improvement still to come, and the Iffraaj gelding is proven on soft conditions so he should give a good account with Andrea Atzeni in the saddle.

2:05 Newmarket (July) - British Stallion Studs EBF Chalice Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m4f ITV

APPHIA (11/1, William Hill) is taken to get back on the scoresheet in this Listed contest, with Hugo Palmer’s charge having already shown useful form in her four starts to date.

Only beaten a short-head at Sandown on her first star behind Serenada, the High Chapparral filly went one better when dead-heating for first place with Hadeeqa at Goodwood next time where she was caught on the post and forced to share the spoils.

She looked a progressive sort in that contest, travelling well throughout, and her subsequent run in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot where she finished fifth behind Coronet was a decent run in the face of stiff opposition.

Testing ground might have accounted for her below-par run behind God Given - Isabel De Urbina in second - here last month, but the prospect of better ground and with improvement still likely can see her continue to give a good account under Josephine Gordon.

Josephine Gordon could enjoy a TV racing double with Apphia and First Drive at Newmarket.

2:25 Goodwood - Qatar Summer Handicap Cl2 (3yo+) 1m6f ITV

SAIGON CITY (9/1, Paddy Power) has taken another forwards step with his form this year, finding only Chemical Charge too strong on his seasonal debut at Doncaster prior to lowering the colours of subsequent Royal Ascot scorer Oriental Fox at Newmarket when last seen in May.

Declan Carroll’s charge was a winner at York last May, going on to finish fifth in that season’s Northumberland Plate and third in the Shergar Cup Stayers’ race, and his progress has continued into this season.

He’s clearly been a difficult sort to train as he remains a relatively low-mileage sort for a seven-year old, so it isn’t beyond possibility that he may still have some further improvement to come. While this is a deeper race than the one he took in at Newmarket, he is proven in soft ground and could still have some scope to do better despite a 5lbs rise in the weights.

2:40 Newmarket (July) - British EBF Fillies' Nursery Handicap Cl2 (2yo) 6f ITV

Josephine Gordon could ride a televised win double at Newmarket as she partners FIRST DRIVE (4/1, Ladbrokes) in this nursery contest, and the Street Cry filly arrives on the back of a solid run at Nottingham last time where she ran out a comfortable winner over Barig Al Thumama despite the narrow margin of victory.

The strength of that form is debatable, but she did the job well and hinted at better to come in time; and now stepping into a handicap for trainer Michael Bell, her opening rating doesn’t look at all prohibitive given she is open to plenty of progress.

Her earlier disappointing run behind Codicil at Kempton may have stretched her stamina as it was over seven furlongs; but she has shown speed for this trip either side of that run, and it was at this trip that she struck last time.

She will need to step up on the bare form of that Nottingham success, but the Bell team have been in good heart and with the prospect of more to come from the Street Cry filly, she is taken to follow up that win here.

3:00 Goodwood - Qatar Gordon Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo) 1m3f218y ITV

Already proven in Group company, the leading form pair of Crystal Ocean and Khalidi are both entitled to go close; but the former has looked a tricky ride in his starts and will need to settle better in this small field, while the latter has to prove effectiveness on this softer ground.

It could be worth taking a value punt with MOUNT MORIAH (7/1, Paddy Power) who takes a big step up in class following bloodless wins in handicaps this season, but Ralph Beckett’s charge could prove equal to the task to register a fourth straight win.

The Mount Nelson gelding most recently ran out a four lengths winner over Getback In Paris at Ascot last month, readily coming clear to score impressively over the longer trip; but he showed effectiveness over shorter when posting a similar effort previously at Newbury, beating Splash Around by a similar margin.

Those pieces of form don’t leave him with a great deal to find against these rivals as he steps into Group Three company for the first time; the manner of those easy handicap wins suggest he has plenty of further improvement, while he is proven to handle softer conditions so he is worth chancing that he can improve again.

Ralph Beckett's Mount Moriah can take the step up in class in her stride to win the Gordon Stakes, live on ITV Racing.

3:35 Goodwood - Qatar Stewards' Cup Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV

The draw for this contest will again be all-important, and drawn high SIR DANCEALOT (12/1, Bet365) could be worth chancing to win this competitive sprint handicap if high-draw numbers prove the place to be.

Progressive as a juvenile last term, winning three of his six starts which included a York Listed contest where he beat Dream Of Dreams cosily, David Elsworth’s charge subsequently posted a fair effort in the Racing Post Trophy although he arguably failed to stay the trip over the stiff Doncaster mile.

The Sir Prancealot gelding has been highly tried this term in Group races at Ascot, running well when sixth behind Blue Point in the Pavilion Stakes; he posted arguably a career-best when beaten just a half-length behind Above The Rest at Newmarket over seven furlongs, beaten a half-length in the Bunbury Cup.

Proven in big fields, the drop back to six furlongs won’t be an issue for the Sir Prancealot gelding, and assuming he can handle the softer conditions here then he ought to go well and can resume winning ways off his low weight with Ryan Moore an eye-catching jockey booking for this assignment

Sir Dancealot (right) can win the Stewards' Cup.
