2019 888Sport Handicap Chase tips - Two against the field for Saturday's feature at Kempton

Adrien Du Pont could continue Paul Nicholls' blistering big-race form of late.

Brian Healy looks ahead to Saturday's 888Sport Handicap Chase at Kempton and picks out two runners against the field who should go well if turning out.

One of the feature races of Saturday’s racecard at Kempton is the competitive 888Sport Handicap Chase, which goes to post at 3.35pm as the fifth race of the afternoon at the Sunbury track.

The three mile contest was formerly known as the Racing Post Chase, the Betbright Chase and latterly the Betdaq Chase before its’ current guise, and the race can often serve as a Grand National trial although not since Rough Quest in 1996 has any horse won this race and the Aintree highlight in the same season.

Boasting a first prize in excess of £55,000 to the winner, a strong and competitive field is sure to face the tapes for this cracking contest which will unfold live on ITV Racing on Saturday afternoon, and Brian Healy picks out two to keep onside for the day’s feature.

Paul Nicholls can do little wrong at present, and ADRIEN DU PONT (11/2, Ladbrokes) could go well for the Ditcheat handler in this contest.

The Califet gelding was a smart hurdler, and he has shown plenty of ability over the larger obstacles although his sometimes suspect jumping has perhaps held him back from fulfilling his potential in this sphere.

A winner of his debut over fences at Fontwell back at the beginning of the 2017/18 season, he locked horns with the likes of Willoughby Court, Coney Island and Sceau Royal in small-field events prior to a short break.

Having found only Happy Diva too strong by one length on his return to action, he fell at Ayr in the Future Champions Novice Chase won by Bigmartre, although he was possibly just starting to feel the pinch when crashing out. Absent until returning to action at Ascot in the Sodexo Gold Cup, he posted an eye-catching fourth behind Traffic Fluide where he may have needed the run.

The Nicholls runner failed to back up that reappearance when disappointing at Newbury on his next start behind Kapcorse; but he made no mistake here on day two of the Christmas Meeting when running out an impressive victor over Just A Sting where he travelled strongly into the race before quickening clear for an easy success.

On that evidence a 4lbs rise in the weights doesn’t look unduly harsh, and now proven over course and distance, and with underfoot conditions no problem then he ought to go close with a repeat effort.

Good ground may not be ideal for BELAMI DES PICTONS (12/1, Coral) meanwhile, but Venetia Williams’ charge was progressive during the 2016/17 season where he racked up a sequence of five wins from six starts at distances up to three miles on testing ground.

His sole start the following campaign saw him brushed aside by the high-class Waiting Patiently at Carlisle in the Colin Parker Memorial Chase, after which he was absent for more than one year until reappearing at Sandown behind Classic Ben where he was clearly in need of the outing and eventually pulled up.

That run ought to have sharpened up the Khalkevi gelding ahead of a tilt at this prize, and he remains an unexposed sort over fences who could still have better to come. He won as a novice from a mark 2lbs higher than his current rating, and he was clearly fancied to do better on his return given he was sent off favourite for that Sandown race.

Given his proximity to the now 169-rated Waiting Patiently on his penultimate start - beaten just over two lengths - and with the likes of Eider winner Baywing further back in third, he has the scope to be competitive from his current mark, and likely to come on for his reappearance he can post a big run if the faster ground and sharp track don’t prove an inconvenience to his chances.

Belami Des Pictons (yellow, blue spots) can post a big run in Saturday's handicap feature.
