3:15pm Aintree Betway Grand Sefton Handicap Chase (Class 2) 2m5f

Nigel Twiston-Davies has the top two places in the Becher betting locked down and he will be hoping Crievehill can continue his progression in the Grand Sefton. Warrior’s Tale finished nicely on his reappearance and Catamaran Du Seuil looks to have a bit of class, but I feel experience over the Grand National fences is key here and CAPTAIN REDBEARD (NAP) could be the best value bet of the day.

After two good victories and a strong second behind The Dutchman in the Peter Marsh, Stuart Coltherd pointed Captain Redbeard at the Grand National. With heavy ground seemingly in his favour, the Scottish raider was supported on the day of the race, but his National debut ended much sooner than connections would have hoped, as Captain Redbeard unseated Sam Coltherd at Foinavon on the first circuit.

This kind of mishap is easily made during the National. Captain Redbeard has jumped the first six fences nicely and must have spent plenty of time schooling over this kind of obstacle in the build-up. The nine-year-old ran a storming race on his reappearance behind Vintage Clouds at Haydock and I fancy he can build on that performance, on softer ground which is sure to suit.
