Oh Purple Reign was my selection in the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom, having scored nicely on his stable debut ten days previous. Andrew Balding’s youngster got a little lost at the top of the hill that day, before finishing nicely to cross the line second. While he has to be regarded as the one to beat, in both of his races, Oh Purple Reign has done his best work in the final furlong, so dropping back from six to five furlongs doesn’t seem a logical move.

Summer Sands ran nicely to place third behind a useful sort of Jeremy Noseda’s on debut and could trouble the market leader. The one I really like the look of, however, is DREAM SHOT (NAP), who managed to win despite looking very green on his first start for James Tate at Goodwood and he’s favoured to lower the favourite’s colours.

Dream Shot was very coltish in the prelims before that run on Cocked Hat Stakes Day and continued that behaviour on the track, pulling and drifting across the track as Jamie Spencer tried to steady his mount behind the leader. Once Spencer asked his mount to go and grab the win, Dream Shot steadied himself and showed plenty of pace in seeing off Spanish Angel to secure an impressive win.

The track here at Beverley is very similar to that Dream Shot prospered on down in Sussex and David Allen rides Beverley as well as any other jockey. This son of Dream Ahead should come on from his stable debut and ground conditions should bring the speedier sorts to the fore. An inside draw should be favourable too.
