4:35pm Curragh Paddy Power Minstrel Stakes (Group 2) 7f

The big story surrounding this race is the landmark reached by the evergreen Gordon Lord Byron. To run in ten races is an achievement for a flat racer, let alone 100! What a wonderful ambassador Tom Hogan’s eleven-year-old has been down the years and it will be brilliant to see him run a solid race.

Frankie Dettori will look to wield his magic wand again on Hey Gaman, who has impressed with two victories in the early stages of the season. Safe Voyage’s love affair with Haydock has continued in 2019 and John Quinn’s charge steps up in Grade after sealing a hat-trick of Haydock titles with a fine win in the John Of Gaunt Stakes.

I feel both, however, are better when there’s a little cut in the ground. Especially Safe Voyage, a known mudlark. There is some rain due to hit the Curragh tomorrow, but I doubt it will have that much of an effect on the going, ensuring the ground will remain firmly in ROMANISED favour.

Ken Condon’s stable star made the headlines at the Curragh last year, pouncing late in the deny to snatch Irish 2000 Guineas glory from right under Aidan O’Brien’s nose. The quick-turnaround between that Classic triumph and Royal Ascot was then a little too much to cope with and Romanised performances after that tailed off as he met wet autumn ground.

After being coaxed through his reappearance at Naas, many were predicting Romanised would run a good race in the Lockinge at Newbury. Sadly, Billy Lee timed his late charge a little too late, powering through the line in fourth place. It was a similar story again at Royal Ascot, where Romanised ran strongly to finish fourth again after sitting out the back for much of the race.

This is a fairly steep drop in grade compared to those Group Ones and the word firm remaining in the going is only going to bolster is chances further. This will be the first time Romainsed has returned to the Curragh since winning the Irish 2000 Guineas. I’m hoping it will spark a return to top form.
