Unlike many of Aidan O’Brien horses, The Irish Rover has been on the decline since winning early on in his two-year-old season and was thrashed by Inverleigh when they clashed over course-and-distance in the Committed Stakes. Ger Lyon’s stable are in flying form and Inverleigh has to be in with a chance once again. He does, however, have six-pounds to find on SO PERFECT in the ratings and Ryan Moore’s mount should be very difficult to beat.

I was really impressed with the consistency So Perfect showed in top-class company last term. An impressive victory over Skitter Scatter in a Group Three in July was followed by strong placed efforts in both the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes and the Cheveley Park. O’Brien’s filly didn’t run badly on her final start of the year at the Breeders’ Cup either, passing the post third in the juvenile turf sprint after pulling hard for much of that sprint.

O’Brien decided to give her stamina a test on her reappearance, stepping So Perfect up to seven furlongs for the Fred Darling Stakes. Wayne Lordon positioned his mount perfectly to attack the leaders with a furlong to travel, but So Perfect came up just short as Dandhu came with a withering run down the centre of the track.

Dropping back in trip looks a sensible plan and So Perfect has come out of the draw well, with likely pacesetter, Flash Gordon drawn on her shoulder. The Commonwealth Cup seems to be the plan looking ahead to Royal Ascot. If So Perfect really wants to rub shoulders with the likes of Calyx in that three-year-old Group One, she really needs to win this race with a little in hand. Any price better than evens should be snapped up.
