The Harvest Festival meeting enters its' fifth day on Thursday.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections and best bets for the fifth day of the Listowel Harvest Festival.

Thursday sees the fifth day of the week-long Listowel Harvest Festival go to post, and another eight-race card goes to post at the Kerry venue where there is both flat and jumps racing to enjoy.

The feature race of day five of the Festival is the Listowel Handicap Hurdle which goes to post at 4.50pm as the sixth race of the day.

5:55 - Kevin McManus Beginners Chase (4yo+) 2m6f

Brian Healy takes a look at the day five racecard on another cracking afternoon of jumps and flat racing, and he gives his selections for every race.

1:55 - Tote Ireland Irish EBF Median Auction Maiden (Plus 10 Race) (2yo) 1m

SANTIAGO (4/11, William Hill) has finished runner-up on both starts to date, beaten only a half-length on debut at Leopardstown and then bumping into the smart Alpine Star at Galway last month where he was beaten three lengths.

However, the Authorized colt sets the standard on those efforts and Aidan O’Brien’s charge could be hard to beat if building on those runs.

The form of the latter has been franked by the winner since landing a Group Two contest at the Curragh, while the fourth has also won since and he ought to prove a tough nut to crack.

2:30 - Byrne Family Handicap (3yo+) 1m

EMPHATIC (13/2, Ladbrokes) has rattled the crossbar on each of his last three starts, but James Larkin’s charge can get off the mark here and shed his maiden tag.

The Epaulette gelding has been denied by a half-length or less in his last two outings with the latest coming at Galway at the beginning of August where he was behind Waitingfortheday who has since won a Group Three contest at Tipperary.

He has plenty of weight to carry here, but the drop in grade will be welcome and if turning out here in similar fettle to recent efforts then he could open his win account in this big field contest.

3:05 - MAC Fuels & General Supplies Fillies Maiden (3yo+) 1m

DEDILLON (6/1, William Hill) has proven to be a consistent sort this term, making the frame in all four starts and the Dylan Thomas filly can get off the mark here.

Andrew Slattery’s charge has found only one too good in her last two outings, latterly beaten five lengths behind Angels Amy at Roscommon in August, and that one bolted up here on Monday before possibly finding the run coming too soon on Wednesday when disappointing.

She finished clear of the third, and there is a suspicion that she could still have further improvement to come so every chance she can get off the mark here.

3:40 - Behans Horseshoe Bar, Restaurant & Townhouse Accomodation Handicap (3yo+) 1m6f

DALILEO (11/4, Paddy Power) won three times during his stint with Mark Johnston, rounding off his time with the Middleham trainer when beating Navajo Star over two miles at Kempton back in January.

The Galileo gelding has since joined Johnny Murtagh’s team, and he made a good start for his new handler when finding only one too good at Dundalk in March when beaten a half-length behind Markhan.

Subsequently off for six months, he made a winning reappearance at Cork at the beginning of this month, running out a five lengths’ winner over Jazz Ranger and he looks weighted to go close back in a handicap and returned to a longer trip.

A good 5lbs claimer helps to ease his burden, and with the yard in decent form he can go close here.

4:15 - Listowel Races Supporters Club Failte Abhaile (Q.R.) Race (4yo+) 1m6f

This could go to Willie Mullins for a third successive year, and SAGLAWY (8/15, Bet365) can get back to winning ways after an absence.

The Youmzain gelding showed some very solid form back in the spring last year, winning twice over hurdles with successes at Gowran Park and Fairyhouse, after which he posted several creditable efforts in defeat which included finishing third to the 2019 Champion Hurdle winner Espoir D’allen at Limerick back in December last year.

He makes his return to action on the flat, but he was a useful sort on the level in France prior to joining this yard, and if he was able to translate his hurdles form to this arena then he could take some beating if fully wound up ahead of this return.

4:50 - Ladbrokes Ireland Listowel Handicap Hurdle (Grade B) (5yo+) 2m

CHOSEN MATE (8/1, Coral) is readily forgiven his last outing at Galway in the feature Galway Hurdle, and Gordon Elliott’s charge is given another chance in this competitive contest.

The Well Chosen gelding won twice in the first half of the season, scoring wins at Fairyhouse and Naas respectively before being tried in an Aintree Grade One contest where he finished fifth behind Reserve Tank.

Having had a pipe-opener on his return from a three months’ break where he finished runner-up on the flat at Leopardstown, he was an early casualty at Galway latest where he stumbed badly on landing over the fourth hurdle and then was badly hampered on the bend before the fifth hurdle and he was pulled up soon after having lost all chance.

He can quickly bounce back from that effort though, and he is still unexposed over timber so could easily have more to offer. If he can replicate his best form then it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him getting competitive and he can get back to winning ways here.

5:25 - Devon Inn Hotel Handicap Hurdle (4yo+) 3m

STACKS MOUNTAIN (12/1, Paddy Power) won twice during the summer, scoring at Tipperary and Punchestown, and Henry de Bromhead’s charge can get back on the scoresheet after running better than the bare result suggests on each of his last two outings.

The Black Sam Bellamy gelding has finished fourth on both those occasions, beating only one home at Killarney latest where he wore first-time cheekpieces, and the headgear is retained for this outing.

He wasn’t helped by being hampered late on in that race although he was held at the time; but he could well bounce back returned to the handicap ranks where a good 7lbs claimer can ease a chunk of his weight burden so he can remain competitive and he could still have better to come as a relatively unexposed stayer.

5:55 - Kevin McManus Beginners Chase (4yo+) 2m6f

MINELLAFORDOLLARS (4/1, Bet365) showed some promise over fences at Gowran Park when tackling Duc Des Genievres back in February, finishing eighth but probably needing the run which was his first in more than one year.

Gordon Elliott’s King’s Theatre gelding then showed the benefit of that run to finish around twelve lengths’ fourth behind Burrows Saint but he has been absent subsequently and makes his belated reappearance here.

A winner between the flats earlier in his career, he also won a Navan bumper as well as scoring over hurdles at Down Royal, and the lightly-raced sort could have more to offer still as a very lightly-raced and low-mileage sort.

The form of his last outing is working out quite well, with the winner of that race going on to win the Irish Grand National, and assuming he is fit to go at the first time of asking following six months off then he could go close if able to run to a similar level in an easier assignment.
