12:40pm Newbury Fuller's Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle (Class 3) 2m½f

New Quay began his second season in novice company with an excellent victory at the weekend, stretching clear of some decent rivals over 19-and-a-half furlongs at Ascot. Dan Skelton must feel he’s ready to go again after just five days rest and the fact that he’s ten pounds well-in has pushed his price past evens.

However, this trip could be a little on the stiff side and his form on softer ground last season was quite poor, so I’m prepared to take the favourite on with CAPITAINE, who’s kept much higher company than this over hurdles and could be well handicapped.

Capitaine has always had ability - a point he proved during his novice hurdling season when he defeated Captain Forez and Thomas Campbell in the Grade Two Kennel Gate Hurdle at Ascot. Results tailed off during the second half of the season, a trend which continued last season, as Paul Nicholls’ charge made a promising start to life over fences before struggling to compete during the spring.

Nicholls dropped his charge back to hurdles after a heavy fall in the Grade One Novices’ Chase at Sandown and Capitaine carried the tag of favouritism into two big handicaps at Cheltenham and Haydock. Comfortable defeats there have helped the six-year-old’s rating over hurdles drop to its lowest ever mark and there are plenty of other factors going in his favour.

Capitaine goes well fresh, he's won on left-handed tracks and a little extra juice in the ground hasn't stopped him winning in the past. Nicholls’ charge has proven himself capable of bullying small fields and Bryony Frost could be the perfect partner to help this exuberant hurdler return to winning ways.
