The Thyestes is known for producing his quality staying chasers, with 2005 Grand National winner, Hedgehunter and three-time Gold Cup runner-up, Djakadam featuring on the illustrious roll of honour.

36 of Ireland’s finest chasers currently feature in the betting for the 2019 renewal of the Thyestes. Our expert has taken a look through the list in full and highlighted two entrants to back in the ante-post market.

2019 Thyestes Handicap Chase Tip

The rain forecast between now and race-day should ensure the ground comes up on the soft side of yielding at Gowran Park. While that will bring several outsiders into the equation, few have the class of DOUNIKOS and Gordon Elliott’s charge offers plenty of value at 33/1. (NOW BACKED INTO 16/1)

Some strong form leading into the spring, including a narrow defeat in the Grade One Flogas Novices’ Chase, saw Dounikos fancied by many to run a big race in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham. Gordon Elliott, however, thought a little more of his charge, handing him his chance to shine in the RSA, where Jack Kennedy’s mount carried a price of 12/1 to post.

Sadly, Dounikos was outclassed in that Grade One, failing to finish the race. The performance ignited a real downturn in form for Elliott’s promising eight-year-old and Dounikos was pulled up in the Irish Grand National and the Growise Champion Novices at the Punchestown Festival.

Despite the good ground being far from his liking, Dounikos has performed well enough during the first half of the season, finishing tenth in the Troytown before a decent seventh in the Paddy Power Handicap Chase at Leopardstown.

Conor Brassil’s mount travelled nicely that day, only to be found wanting for pace over the final couple of furlongs. A more attritional test is needed for Dounikos to be at his best, but the forecast is encouraging and this former Grade Two winner is certainly capable of winning a race of this ilk. Dounikos is a very lively outsider to be watched closely.
