4:55pm Leicester Mick Connolly Memorial Handicap (Class 3) 7f

Although the four-day turnaround suggests Six Strings has come out of his last appearance well, I’m prepared to take the well-backed favourite on here. Mick Appleby’s charge was beaten on Friday, in a much-weaker race than this, and the handicapper still decided to up his rating by three pounds. Six Strings will be opposed by a number of strong three-year-olds here and I doubt whether Appleby’s charge will be able to muster the career-best display needed to beat them.

Chatham House has been dropped back to six furlongs on his last two starts, despite winning nicely over this trip at Newbury two starts ago. He poses a clear and present danger to Six Strings, as does Clive Cox’s Wise Council. However, it wasn’t so long ago that BREATH OF AIR (NAP) was going off as the favourite for a big ITV handicap at Newmarket and I fancy this could be the stage of his return to winning form.

Charlie Hills’ charge was backed into 3/1 to win the opening handicap on Craven Stakes day at flat-racing HQ, but couldn’t muster the finishing burst to make serious inroads from off-the-pace. Since then, Breath Of Air has been beaten three times over seven furlongs, before a sixth place finish on his return to sprinting distances at Ffos Las last time out.

On the face of it, Breath Of Air’s form this term doesn’t offer much encouragement. However, Hills’ charge has only run one poor race, clocking an RPR higher than his official rating in all of his last three starts. Kieran Shoemark’s mount was only beaten by three lengths in a hugely competitive three-year-old handicap at Doncaster, before encountering various traffic problems when finishing fifth behind Land Of Legends at Glorious Goodwood.

Breath Of Air has slid down the handicap by five pounds during the course of the season. Returning to seven furlongs seems a sensible move and this is a distinct step down in class to any of the races he's took part in over this trip. There’s plenty of value in taking a risk on Breath Of Air at 13/2.
