Raise A Spark has recorded two victories in chases this season, including a course-and-distance triumph back in November. While Donald McCain’s charge is respected, his form has dipped in recent start and he will have to give plenty of weight away to ZALVADOS, who has shaped well on all three of his runs over fences and should be good enough to claim a maiden victory.

This time last year, Oliver Greenall was preparing his charge for a crack at the Betfair Hurdle, where Zalvados was looking on-course for a top five finish before an error at the last saw his drop back to seventh. A decent second behind Gumball at Ludlow in April have Greenall plenty of reason to be optimistic heading into the new season, but after a couple of limp efforts in handicap hurdle, Zalvados was switched to novice chasing in November.

The six-year-old looked to be mounting a serious challenge on debut, but the gap Robbie Dunne spied approaching the last closed unexpectedly and Zalvados couldn’t muscle his way through. On his second start, Zalvados was beaten into second by the dangerous Kauto Rico, before having to settle for the silver medal once again at Haydock, losing out to Dicosimo by just two lengths.

This is the easiest task Zalvados has faced over fences to date and he will enjoy the extra cut in the ground. Blinkers should help Greenall’s charge settle down at the rear of this four-horse race and Henry Brooke, who takes the ride for the first time, boasts a 30% strike rate around Ayr this season.
