1:55pm Kempton 32Red Kauto Star Novices' Chase (In Memory Of Nigel Clark) (Grade 1) 3m

The Kauto Star always lives up to it’s billing and viewers can look forward to a fantastic renewal on Boxing Day. It was hard not to be impressed with the composure Santini showed to win a Grade Two on his first start over fences and Nicky Henderson’s charge could be the best of this lot moving forwards, but I’m not totally sure the flat track here at Kempton will suit the favourite and this will be the first time he’s ever gone right-handed.

Bags Groove has a bit to prove at this sort of level, as does La Bague Au Roi, who usually does her best work when beating up lesser quality opposition. The Worlds End is worth a second look, but TOPOFTHEGAME is one of my favourite horses in training and I think he will hand Paul Nicholls a fifth victory in this Grade One.

Like Santini, chasing was always going to be Topofthegame’s dish, but he still managed to achieve some big results over hurdles. Nicholls' imposing six-year-old carried 11-7 to victory in the Grade 3 Heroes Handicap at Sandown and came within a whisker of winning the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.

I was very excited to see Topofthegame make his second debut over fences at Exeter, but his race looked to be over before it had even begun, as Harry Cobden’s mount was spooked by the starters tape and gave a strong field a 25 length head-start. Neither horse nor jockey panicked, working their way back into the race and Topofthegame eventually came up just two lengths short of Defi Du Seuil, beating Black Op into third in the process.

Nicholls will have been delighted with that run, considering that nightmare start and Topofthegame jumped very nicely throughout. Stepping up to three miles will be ideal and he boasts a strong record on similar tracks to Kempton. 7/2 is too good to turn down!
