The American Triple Crown is a feat achieved rarely by the thoroughbred horse. The collection of three races including the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes is a sequence that could catapult a horse to superstardom in North America.

It is a sequence that has eluded the thirteen contenders since its last conquering in 1978. This year the great hope falls upon AMERICAN PHAROAH (10/11, Sky Bet) for trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Victor Espinoza, who will be hoping it is third time lucky after recent failures aboard War Emblem and California Chrome twelve months ago.

The three-year old son of Pioneereof The Nile has looked excellent in winning both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in recent weeks and will now head to Belmont Park to chase a piece of American racing history.

The trio of races demand a horse that possesses the necessary speed, stamina and durability to be able to win the world famous Triple Crown contested over a period of five short weeks.

American Pharoah started the sequence in the Kentucky Derby where he boasted fantastic power down the home straight to win by a length to Firing Line. It was a hard-fought duel between the first pair but the Bob Baffert-trained colt proved too much to handle as he stayed on strongly at the finish.

His following outing in the Preakness Stakes showcased a sensible piece of jockeyship from Victor Espinoza in, what can only be described as, awful conditions. American Pharoah broke from the stalls and was asked to race forward where he never looked in trouble, scooting away with a seven-length win on the sloppy Pimlico dirt.

He will now travel to Belmont Park on Saturday June 6th looking to complete the American Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes. It is a race over twelve-furlongs that requires the necessary stamina and speed to perform effectively around the sweeping bends of New York’s famous racecourse.

The ultimate Belmont Stakes horse will also need a good racing mentality as the illustrious race can often become tainted in hard-luck stories after a roughly-fought contest.

If American Pharoah is to emulate the eleven horses before him - to have won the Triple Crown - then he will need to possess a good deal of durability with it being his third race in a matter on five-weeks.

It is that fact alone has been the downfall for so many contenders that have gone before, none-more-so than California Chrome and his owner’s notorious TV rant last year.

Preparations for American Pharoah’s bid have been widely reported as positive. His recent track work has left both trainer and jockey delighted. Questions are still to be answered as to whether a strongly run twelve-furlongs is suitable but connections could not be more confident and bullish.

The three-year old will need to overcome a number of unexposed rivals that will arrive at Belmont Park in fresher condition, in particular second-favourite Frosted. This Godolphin-owned colt was producing his best work at the finish in the Kentucky Derby to suggest a race of this nature could be ideal.

However, American Pharoah is the rightful favourite for this Grade One prize and will have the superior support from the American public. It will be a historic success for all connected with the horse and one in which will be remembered for years to come.

The stage is now set for American Pharoah as he bids to become only the twelfth winner of the American Triple Crown.
