2016 Kentucky Derby tips - Expert selections for Churchill Down's 'Run for the Roses'

Mohaymen.

The countdown to Saturday's 2016 Kentucky Derby is over and the excitement is mounting over who will win the 142nd renewal of the Run for the Roses, with a post time scheduled for 11.34pm GMT.

America's finest three-year-old colts battle it out over ten furlongs at Churchill Downs, in an event also nicknamed 'the fastest two minutes in sports', and Nyquist (3/1, Ladbrokes) is the favourite for the famous Grade One.

Doug O’Neill’s stable star brings an unbeaten record into the race and the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile hero has shown that he has what it takes to mix it at the top level.  He represents formidable connections and he has dominated the betting for the Derby for some time.  He is sure to be popular, it isn’t hard to see why, but he looked green when he scored in the Florida Derby last time out and he is yet to fully prove he stays this distance.  That, coupled with the fact he missed a little training with a fever, means that it makes sense to take him on and there is value to be had elsewhere.

Nyquist wins the Breeders' Cup Juvenile

Outwork looks a major contender for Todd Pletcher and morning line prices look to underestimate his chances, Exaggerator laughed off any stamina doubts when he won the Santa Anita Derby and Mor Spirit has to be respected hailing from Bob Baffert ultra-powerful yard.  They must all head to Churchill Downs with a chance, but the wise money could be on MOHAYMEN (8/1, Ladbrokes) and Kieran McLaughlin’s colt can bounce back to winning ways at the perfect time.

The selection’s victories in the Fountain Of Youth and Holly Bull were both mightily impressive and he was backed to beat Nyquist when the two clashed in the Floriday Derby last month.  Sent off a 4/5 favourite, things didn’t go according to plan for jockey Junior Alvarado and he was caught wide when his rivals were on the inside in the feature.  His tricky passage was far from ideal and he could only finish fourth in the showpiece.

McLaughlin retains the faith with the son of Tapit and he is the value bet in Saturday’s eagerly-anticipated showdown.
