Nyquist was an impressive winner of the Kentucky Derby.

If the general expert opinion and the betting markets are to be believed, there isn’t much point in running the Preakness Stakes at all next Saturday at Pimlico Racecourse.

Nyquist has been well backed for the race since his devastating victory in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill downs on May 7th, and currently heads the market at 4/5 generally. Many still believe there is value left in the price, given the manner of his success in Louisville that day, and he has been the hype horse for the Triple Crown ever since.

The Triple Crown consists of the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, and is the holy grail for American three year olds each year. The last horse to win it was American Pharoah in 2015, but he was bridging a huge gap back to the previous winner Affirmed in 1978.

Nyquist wins the Kentucky Derby

Hopes are high for Nyquist, and he looks to possess the right blend of speed and stamina. His win in the Kentucky Derby was remarkable in that he chased a strong pace the whole way through the race, and still had the stamina to hold off the late challenge of Exaggerator inside the final furlong.

Much was made of the way Exaggerator finished his race that day, but his strong finish was more down to the fact that he didn’t have to exert himself anything like as much as Nyquist in the early stages of the race. The slightly shorter trip of the Preakness Stakes will suit Nyquist more so than Exaggerator, and he can confirm superiority over his rival for the fifth time (from five meetings).

Perhaps the biggest threat to Nyquist will come from a horse who didn’t compete in the Kentucky Derby in the shape of Stradivari. Trained by Todd Pletcher, this horse has won his last two starts by an aggregate 25 lengths (albeit in much lesser company). Training problems meant that he was forced to miss the Kentucky Derby, but the plus side is that he will now arrive a fresh horse. His inexperience may just find him out however, as he has only had three lifetime starts, and has never run in a stakes race. That said, he comes from one of the most powerful stables in America, and his trainer would not be running here if he didn’t think he had a special horse.

In conclusion, all known form points to this being a straightforward success for Nyquist (4/5). If one were to look for some each way value against the favourite, I would be pointing them in the direction of Stradivari at a best price of 10/1.
