Our Paddy Power Plate Tips look at this interesting middle-distance handicap hurdles

contest with its fair share of favourites landing the odds in the last handful of editions. Our experts look at the leading contenders at the head of this year’s market along with name-dropping some longer-priced picks.

CELEBRE D’ALLEN will arrive at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival with some significant wind in his sails, having won all three efforts this season. The Philip Hobbs-trained 10-year-old is thriving once again after completing a hattrick at Warwick in mid-February. This will be the biggest challenge of the season for him, but he looks to have rolled back the years since moving to his new yard.

THE GLANCING QUEEN is another that would bring big claims to Paddy Power Plate Tips at the Festival. Her latest run saw her come home second in the Dipper Novices at Cheltenham behind only L’Homme Presse, which was no disgrace. Before that, she had won a couple of efforts over the timbers this season.

FUSIL RAFFLES needs a little spark of revival at the moment, but he did claim a 3m win over the fences at Wetherby earlier this season. He was also a runner-up in the Marsh Novices last year at the Festival and is a previous course winner.

There have been plenty of fascinating early entries around for this year’s Paddy Power Plate Tips betting, including SIMPLY THE BETTS, last year’s winner THE SHUNTER and one of the leading 2023 contenders IMPERIAL ALCAZAR who scored a win here at Cheltenham on a similar trip in January.

How Often Does a Favourite Horse Win The Paddy Power Plate Race

There has been a bit of a run from favourites in the Paddy Power Plate betting odds in the last few years. There have been three winning favourites in the previous four renewals of this Cheltenham Festival handicap chase action.

Last year’s winner, The Shunter, scored as a 9/4 FAV. It’s been an exciting decade to look back on for Paddy Power Plate odds. The biggest-priced winner in the last six editions was the 16/1 shot Empire Of Dirt in 2016.

But two of the three years before that, underdogs Carrickboy shone from a 50/1 SP in 2013, as did Darna in 2015 from a 33/1 SP. There will always be outliers in results, and the most recent trend has been towards stronger market options.

The last six favourites to have gotten home in the Paddy Power Plate have filled out one of the top two spots.

Paddy Power Plate History & Present Time

There is an excellent long history to look back through in the Paddy Power Plate, inaugurated in the early 1950s. The original name of the race was the Mildmay of Flete Handicap Chase.

Because of sponsorship, it has been under other names, like the Racing Post Plate and the Brown Advisory. Paddy Power Plate tips look at chasers who are five years or above taking on a Grade 3 challenge. The distance is a 2m 4 1/2f trip (approx), a handicap fixture.

Paddy Power Plate Jockey & Trainer Records

Only two horses have won the Paddy Power Plate twice before, and that was The Tsarevich in the mid-80s and Elfast in the early 90s. So you have to dig back further through the rich history of this race to get to the most successful jockey – Fred Winter in the 1950s.

Of course, we want to keep Paddy Power Plate Tips a little more modern. Only B J Cooper and Tom Scudamore have won the race twice in the last 20 renewals.

In the last two decades, there have been joint leading trainers in the Paddy Power Plate, with Venetia Williams and David Pipe sharing the honours of three wins each. Nicky Henderson is the only other to get more than one on the board (2).
