Glorious Goodwood gets under way with a high quality card, featuring the Group 1 Goodwood Cup. All eyes will be on Stradivarius as he bids for an unprecedented fourth consecutive victory in the race. He will be partnered by regular rider Frankie Dettori, always popular among Goodwood tips.
Goodwood tips day 1 races also include the Group 2 Vintage Stakes and Lennox Stakes. There have been some top class winners of the Vintage Stakes in recent years including Pinatubo last year, subsequently placed in the 2000 Guineas. The Lennox Stakes could see Sir Dancealot attempt a hat-trick of victories.
13.50 Goodwood Tips: Unibet Handicap (4yo plus) 1m 2f
The meeting starts with a very competitive ten furlong handicap and 13.50 Goodwood tips are likely to cover a wide range of horses. The race has only yielded one winning favourite in the past ten years. 25-1 outsider Fayez weaved through the pack to beat Jazeel and joint-favourite Setting Sail last year. All three horses had run in the John Smith’s Diamond Jubilee Cup at York on their previous start.
14.25 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Vintage Stakes (2yo) (Group 2) 7f
The Vintage Stakes is often on the agenda for two-year-olds that ran well at Royal Ascot. The roll of honour makes impressive reading and includes Epsom Derby winners Troy (1978), Dr Devious (1991) and Sir Percy (2005) and 2000 Guineas winners Don’t Forget Me (1986), Mister Baileys (1993) and Galileo Gold (2015).
Vintage Stakes tips are likely to focus on the favourite, successful in six of the last seven seasons. The victory of Pinatubo had been preceded by Dark Vision (2018) and Expert Eye (2017) with all three colts earning quotes for the 2000 Guineas with impressive performances.
15.00 Goodwood Tips: Lennox Stakes (3yo plus) (Group 2) 7f
The Lennox Stakes is one of the top seven-furlong races of the season and always attracts a good quality field. David Elsworth’s Sir Dancealot (2018, 2019) became only the second horse to win the race twice following Nayyir (2002, 2003). A hat-trick bid could be on the cards after his eye-catching fourth behind Limato at Newmarket last month.
If you have taken advantage of a Goodwood free bet offer, well-backed horses have a good record in the Lennox Stakes in recent years. Favourites or joint-favourites won for six of the eight seasons between 2011 and 2018. However, many Lennox Stakes tips were sunk when 50-1 outsider Breton Rock swept to victory in 2017.
15.35 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Goodwood Cup (3yo plus) (Group 1) 2m
Many punters will look no further than Stradivarius for their Goodwood Cup tip, although he is likely to start at prohibitive odds. John Gosden’s stayer strode clear to win the Ascot Gold Cup by 10 lengths, completing a hat-trick in the race. That was on unfavourable soft ground so it is difficult to see any of his vanquished rivals turning the tables at Goodwood.
Cross Counter finished third last year and filled the same place in the Ascot Gold Cup last month. The 2018 Melbourne Cup winner is probably better at this shorter trip. The same is true of Mark Johnston’s Nayef who made a bold bid to make all the running at Ascot.
Goodwood betting offers are likely to revolve around Stradivarius. Paddy Power offered new customers Stradivarius at 50-1 for Royal Ascot to a £1 stake so do keep a look out for similar offers! The Goodwood Cup is usually a good race for favourites with Illustrious Blue (2010) at 8-1 being the longest priced winner in the past ten years.
16.10 Goodwood Tips EBF Maiden Stakes (2yo) 6f
Frankie Dettori won this race last year on 15-8 favourite Cobra Eye, trained by John Quinn. In doing so, he became the first outright favourite to win in the past ten runnings. The market in two-year-old races can be a useful guide for your Goodwood tips as most winners were in the first three in the betting. There was one notable exception; Thechildren’strust won at 100-1 for Gary Moore and Hector Crouch in 2017!
16.45 Goodwood Tips: Chelsea Barracks Handicap (4yo plus) 5f
This is the first sprint handicap of Glorious Goodwood, home of the famous cavalry charge that is the Stewards’ Cup on Saturday. Green Power (16-1) led home Poyle Vinnie (33-1) last year, continuing a trend that has made this one of the trickiest races for Goodwood tips day 1. El Astronaute was a 33-1 winner in 2017 with an average winning SP of 16-1 over the past five seasons.
17.15 Goodwood Tips: Unibet Fillies’ Handicap (3yo plus) 1m
Maid For Life won the finale at 12-1 on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood 2019. The previous three winners had all been well supported, notably Move Swiftly who was a winning favourite for William Haggas and James Doyle in 2018. Roger Varian (Shenanigans 2017) and Ralph Beckett (Desert Haze 2016) have also been successful in this race.
