Glorious Goodwood Tips Day 2: Your Guide to Sussex Stakes Day
Goodwood Tips Day Two
The second day of Glorious Goodwood features the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, one of the most prestigious mile races of the season. The race often attracts the best three-year-old milers who clash with older generations. Many of the greatest milers in history are featured on the roll of honour including Brigadier Gerard (1971), Kris (1979), Giant’s Causeway (2000) and Rock of Gibraltar (2002).
Khalid Abdullah’s Frankel (2011, 2012) became the first horse to win the Sussex Stakes twice. The same colours will be carried this year by Siskin, the winner of the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh. Sussex Stakes tips will probably focus on Siskin and Palace Pier, who was the star of a 150-1 treble for Frankie Dettori on the final day of Royal Ascot.
The supporting card includes the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes which features some of the fastest juveniles in training. Our Goodwood tips day 2 will start at the opposite end of the spectrum with the longest race of the week, the Goodwood Handicap over two and a half miles.
1.50 Unibet Goodwood Handicap (3yo plus) 2m 4½f
The extreme distance of this race means that this is a logical target for National Hunt or dual-purpose horses. Lil Rockerfeller was favourite to win the race for the second consecutive season last year but he faded in the closing stages behind Sir Mark Prescott’s Timoshenko. Lil Rockerfeller had landed a gamble 12 months’ earlier, bucking the trend in a race which has produced winners at 33-1, 25-1 and 20-1 in recent times.
2.25 Unibet Handicap (3yo) 1m 4f
Sir Ron Priestley was a typically game Mark Johnston-trained winner last year when holding Durston by a neck. He had disappointed in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot, often a good form guide for your Goodwood tips day 2. Eminence finished third in both races last year for Aidan O’Brien. This season’s King George V Handicap was won by Hukum from the well-backed Kipps with Johnston’s Subjectivist in third place.
3.00 Markel Insurance Molecomb Stakes (2yo) (Group 3) 5f
The Molecomb Stakes has been won by some very speedy two-year-olds in the past. The brilliant Marwell won here in 1980 and other notable winners include Risky (1993), Kachy (2015) and Yalta (2016). Liberty Beach won last year for John Quinn and Jason Hart to become the first winning favourite in the Molecomb since Zebedee in 2010.
3.35 Qatar Sussex Stakes (3yo plus) (Group 1) 1m
The Sussex Stakes is rightly billed as the race of the week with a cracking line-up in prospect. Siskin staked his claim to be champion three-year-old miler when winning the Irish 2000 Guineas for Ger Lyons. His main market rival in the Sussex Stakes betting is Palace Pier, trained by John Gosden and ridden by Frankie Dettori. He maintained his unbeaten record when beating Pinatubo and Wichita in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Circus Maximus will bid to go one better after chasing home Too Darn Hot in this race 12 months’ ago. He showed terrific battling qualities to deny Terebellum in the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot where Mohaather finished an unlucky seventh. Favourites have a good record in the Sussex Stakes with 7 victories in the past 10 years. Shock results are rare, although Here Comes When won at 20-1 in 2017 when revelling in his favoured heavy ground.
Bookmakers will be making some fantastic Goodwood betting offers for this race. New customers will be offered a special price on the big race favourites, sometimes as high as 40-1 to a £1 stake. There will also be plenty of Goodwood free bet offers for both new and existing customers.
4.10 EBF Alice Keppel Fillies’ Conditions Stakes (2yo) 5f
Mark Johnston saddled his second winner of the day with Mrs Bouquet in this race last year, a meeting where he often does well. Mrs Bouquet beat the favourite Mighty Spirit and Flippa The Strippa as market leaders dominated the finish. Johnston would go on to become the leading trainer in the history of Glorious Goodwood when Nayef Road registered his 81st winner at this meeting in the Gordon Stakes.
4.45 British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap (3yo plus) 1m 2f
Megan Nicholls rode 12-1 shot Mannaal to victory for Simon Crisford in 2019. Sir Michael Stoute’s Vivionn finished second with top weight Naqaawa back in third. In May, Crisford teamed up with his son Ed to become the first official dual licenced training team in Britain. This is a tricky race for Goodwood tips day 2 with average winning odds of 11-1.
5.55 Charlton Handicap (3yo plus) 7f
The final race on day 2 of Glorious Goodwood is another competitive event with only one successful favourite in the past eight seasons. That was Magic City, trained by Richard Hannon Snr and it could pay to stick with the Hannon team for your Goodwood tips in the lucky last! Richard Hannon Jnr has won the Charlton Handicap for the past two years with Medahim and Dirty Rascal, both well-backed at 7-1.
