Glorious Goodwood Tips Day 2: Your Guide to Sussex Stakes Day

The second day of Glorious Goodwood features the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, one of the most prestigious mile races of the season. The race often attracts the best three-year-old milers who clash with older generations. Many of the greatest milers in history are featured on the roll of honour including Brigadier Gerard (1971), Kris (1979), Giant’s Causeway (2000) and Rock of Gibraltar (2002).

Khalid Abdullah’s Frankel (2011, 2012) became the first horse to win the Sussex Stakes twice. That record will remain intact as last year’s Sussex Stakes winner, Mohaather, is no longer in training.

The supporting card includes the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes which features some of the fastest juveniles in training. Our Goodwood day 2 tips will start at the opposite end of the spectrum with the longest race of the day, the Goodwood Handicap over two and a half miles.

13.50 Goodwood Tips: The Unibet 15 To Go Handicap Stakes (3yo) 1m4f

Glorious Goodwood day 2 begins with a 1m4f handicap which is consigned to three-year-olds. Mambo Nights ran out a game winner of the race last year, and in 2020, subsequent Group performer Sir Ron Priestley landed the spoils for Mark Johnston and Franny Norton. The race often goes to a horse relatively well found in the market with only two of the last ten winners priced at double-figure odds.

14.25 Goodwood Tips: The Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes (3yo+) (Group 3) 7f

The first Group race on Glorious Goodwood day 2 is a contest for fillies and mares over seven furlongs. Jubiloso was an expensive loser in 2019 for favourite backers as Classic winning Billesdon Brook (12/1) returned to her best. Yet, last year’s renewal saw favourite backers rewarded thanks to One Master’s last grasp victory. Those renewals were slightly unusual as they were both won by older horses, and five of the previous eight renewals had gone the way of three-year-olds.

15.00 Goodwood Tips: The Markel Molecomb Stakes (2yo) (Group 3) 5f

The Molecomb Stakes has been won by some very speedy two-year-olds in the past. The brilliant Marwell won here in 1980 and other notable winners include Risky (1993), Kachy (2015) and Yalta (2016). Michael O’Callaghan’s Steel Bull took the spoils last year, providing Ireland with their first win in the Molecomb since Requinto (2011).

15.35 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Sussex Stakes (3yo+) (Group 1) 1m

The Sussex Stakes is rightly billed as the race of the week with a cracking line-up in prospect. The hardy Poetic Flare staked his claim to be champion three-year-old miler when winning the St James’s Palace for Jim Bolger. His main market rival in the Sussex Stakes betting is Palace Pier, trained by John Gosden and ridden by Frankie Dettori. He brought his record in 2021 to a perfect 3-3 when taking the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.

Alcohol Free looks the most dangerous female representative having gone down on her sword in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last time out. Favourites have a relatively good record in the Sussex Stakes with 6 victories in the past 10 years. Shock results are rare, although Here Comes When won at 20/1 in 2017 when revelling in his favoured heavy ground.

Our Sussex Stakes tips will factor in ground conditions, with Palace Pier favouring an ease in the ground, whilst Poetic Flare prefers a fast surface.

16.10 Goodwood Tips: Alice Keppel EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes (2yo) 5f

Charlie Appleby’s Miss Jingles caused a small upset when landing this race last year, where she saw off the challenge of the well-touted Spright. That victory followed on from the 2019 success of Mrs Bouquet – who took the race’s inaugural renewal.

16.45 Goodwood Tips: British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap (3yo+) 1m 2f

Harry Bentley rode 22/1 shot Chamade to victory for Ralph Beckett in 2020. Roger Varian’s Waliyak finished second with Dean Street Doll back in third. This is a tricky race for Goodwood tips day 2 with no winner priced up at shorter than 7/1 in it’s five renewals to date.

17.20 Goodwood Tips: World Pool Handicap (3yo+) 7f

The final race on day 2 of Glorious Goodwood is another competitive event with only two successful favourites in the past ten seasons. One was Magic City, trained by Richard Hannon Snr and it could pay to stick with the Hannon team for your Goodwood tips in the lucky last! Richard Hannon Jnr has won the race in two of the past three years with Medahim and Dirty Rascal, and he sent out the 20/1 runner-up in last year’s renewal.
