Goodwood Tips Day 3

The Group 1 Nassau Stakes is the feature race on day 3 of Goodwood, traditionally known as Ladies’ day. The late Sir Henry Cecil trained Midday to win this race for three consecutive seasons between 2009 and 2011. Other notable winners include Crimplene (2000), Ouija Board (2006), The Fugue (2012) and Minding (2016).

Thursday’s card also features a trial for the St Leger in the Gordon Stakes and some smart two-year-olds in the Richmond Stakes. The Magnolia Cup precedes the first race, a popular charity event for lady riders which received plenty of media coverage in 2019. Khadijah Mellah became the first woman to ride in a race in Britain wearing a hijab and duly romped home in front on 25-1 outsider Haverland.

13.50 Goodwood Tips: Unibet Handicap (3yo) 1m 2f

Well-backed horses dominated this race last year with joint-favourites Forest Of Dean and Sinjaari separated by third favourite Fox Premier. The first and third had both run in the London Gold Cup at Newbury. Communique (2018) and Labarinto (2011) were the only other winning favourites in the past ten years. Communique was a third winner of this race for trainer Mark Johnston during the same period.

14.25 Goodwood Tips: Richmond Stakes (2yo) (Group 3) 6f

The Richmond Stakes has been won by some top quality juveniles in the past. Bachir (1999) went on to win the Irish 2000 Guineas the following season. The last horse to win the Richmond Stakes and go on to win an English Classic was Palestine who won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in 1950.

Other notable winners include Dick Turpin (2009) and Shalaa (2015). Last year’s renewal was won by Golden Horde (15-2) for Clive Cox and Adam Kirby, the winner of the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last month. Favourites have won five of the last ten runnings and almost half of recent winners had won last time out.

15.00 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Gordon Stakes (3yo) (Group 3) 1m 4f

The Gordon Stakes often attracts horses that have failed in the Epsom Derby and is regarded as a St Leger trial. Millenary (2000), Sixties Icon (2006) and Conduit (2008) all won both races. The Gordon Stakes was also won by subsequent Group 1 winners Harbinger (2009), Noble Mission (2012), Highland Reel (2015), Ulysses (2016) and Crystal Ocean (2017).

Nayef Road won at 9-1 in 2019, the longest priced winner of the Gordon Stakes in the past 10 years. This victory established Mark Johnston as the most successful trainer in the history of Glorious Goodwood with 81 winners. The race is usually dominated by the market leaders with all but two of the last ten winners being in the first three in the Goodwood betting.

15.35 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Nassau Stakes (3yo plus) (Group 1) 1m 2f

The Nassau Stakes is a top target for horses that ran well in the Epsom Oaks, Minding winning both races in 2016. Bookmakers will headline the Nassau Stakes for your Goodwood free bets and special offers. John Gosden, Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O’Brien have all enjoyed plenty of success in this race and any leading contenders from these stables should be noted for your Goodwood tips day 3.

There was a major surprise in the Nassau Stakes last year when Japanese trained Deirdre struck at 20-1. English and Irish 1000 Guineas winner Hermosa started favourite but trailed in a remote last of the nine runners. The five-year-old mare ended a run of four consecutive victories for three-year-olds in this race. Winsili (2013) also returned at 20-1 but there have been five winning favourites in the past ten years.

16.10 Goodwood Tips: Telegraph Nursery Handicap (2yo) 7f

Mark Johnston saddled Governor Of Punjab to win the Telegraph Nursery Handicap in 2019 under Ryan Moore. Having moved to a record 81 Glorious Goodwood winners earlier in the afternoon, Johnston wasted no time in notching number 82. It was his third victory in this race in the past six seasons and a third consecutive winning favourite/joint-favourite. These included Billesdon Brook (2017) who went on to win the 1000 Guineas the following year at odds of 66-1!

16.45 Goodwood Tips: Markel Insurance British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (2yo) 7f

This race has produced some top class fillies including Group 1 winners Amazing Maria (2013) and Rhododendron (2016). It would have paid to follow the money for your Goodwood tips in this race from 2014 to 2017 with four heavily-backed favourites obliging. Punters were denied last year when the two joint-favourites were beaten by 16-1 chance Vividly, trained by Charles Hills and ridden by Kieran Shoemark.

17.20 Goodwood Tips: Halnaker Handicap (3yo) 5f

Our Goodwood tips day 3 guide ends with the typically competitive five-furlong sprint. There have been some long priced winners of this race including Pal Of The Cat (2013) at 20-1 and Indescribable (2015) at 18-1. Quench Dolly (2017) was the only winning favourite in the past ten years. It could be worth noting any entries here for trainer Kevin Ryan, successful with Perfect Blossom (2010), Online Alexander (2014) and Laughton (2016).
