Glorious Goodwood Tips Day 5: Goodwood Tips For the Final Day Including the Stewards Cup
Goodwood Tips Day 5
The final day of Glorious Goodwood features the Stewards’ Cup, one of the most prestigious sprint handicaps in the racing calendar. There are always a wide range of Goodwood Tips for this six-furlong cavalry charge on one of the fastest tracks in the country. Punters got it right last year when 4-1 favourite Khaadem strode clear to beat locally-trained Open Wide and outsider Raucous.
The Stewards Cup has been won by some high class sprinters including Soba (1982), Lochsong (1992), Danetime (1997) and Borderlescott (2006). There have been five two-time winners of the race, the last of which was Sky Diver (1967, 1968).
13.50 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Stewards’ Sprint Stakes Handicap (3yo plus) 6f
The action gets under way with the Stewards’ Sprint Stakes, a consolation race for horses that failed to make the ballot for the featured Stewards’ Cup. Scorching Heat (2017) is the only successful favourite in the last ten years in a race which has produced an average winning SP of around 14-1. The Stewards’ Sprint could provide some clues regarding any draw bias ahead of your Goodwood Tips day 5 for the big race at 3.40.
14.25 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Summer Handicap (3yo plus) 1m 6f
Leading course trainer Mark Johnston is the man to follow for your Goodwood Tips in this race. He has won the Summer Handicap three times in the past five seasons, including last year with King’s Advice (7-2 favourite). He became only the second winning favourite during the past ten years in a race where it pays to stick with horses with winning form over a mile and a half or beyond.
15.00 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (3yo plus) (Group 2) 1m 6f
Stamina is also the key for your Lillie Langtry Stakes tips, a race confined to fillies and mares. Enbihaar was an impressive winner for John Gosden and Jim Crowley in 2019. She started co-favourite of three in a race where most winners tend to come from the first three in the Goodwood betting.
There have been two dual winners of the Lillie Langtry Stakes; Tartouche (2005, 2006) and Wild Coco (2012, 2013). Simple Verse won at 11-1 in 2015 before going on to win the St Leger at Doncaster. The average winning SP is around 11-2 over the last ten years.
15.40 Goodwood Tips: Unibet Stewards’ Cup (3yo plus) 6f
The Stewards’ Cup is the biggest betting race of the week and can be a very difficult puzzle to solve. Favourites have won three of the last five renewals and all of them were improving three-year-olds. The draw can influence the outcome and it may be worth noting that Magical Memory (2015), Dancing Star (2016) and Khaadem (2019) were all drawn low.
There have also been several shock results here including Lancelot Du Lac (2017) at 25-1 and Gifted Master (2018) at 20-1. The latter also bucked the trend where the draw is concerned by winning from stall 25. Horses that ran disappointingly in the Wokingham Handicap often run here where the sharper track and faster ground can result in a much improved performance.
There are always plenty of Goodwood Special Offers on Stewards’ Cup day. New customers can take advantage of Goodwood Free Bets including Bet365 who will match your deposit with free bets up to £100! There will also be enhanced place terms on the Stewards’ Cup with William Hill paying out to sixth place in 2019.
16.15 Goodwood Tips: Qatar EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes (2yo) 7f
Aidan O’Brien saddled a rare runner in a maiden in Britain in this race last year but King Of Athens finished well beaten behind 16-1 Persuasion. Don’t be put off by that result as it was by far the longest priced winner in the past ten years. Persuasion was trained by Charles Hills who also won this race with the useful Dutch Connection (2014). Mark Johnston won in 2017 with subsequent Epsom Derby runner-up Dee Ex Bee.
16.50 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Handicap (3yo) 7f
The Qatar Handicap is another race plundered by Mark Johnston in recent years. He won it with Enlace (2015), Hawatif (2016) and Vale Of Kent (2018) so anything he runs here is worth considering for your Goodwood Tips day 5. The latter was the only winning favourite in the past 10 years. Godolphin won this in 2019 with Land Of Legends, trained by Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by Callum Shepherd.
17.25 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Apprentice Handicap (3yo plus) 1m 1f
Godolphin and Bin Suroor closed out Goodwood 2019 with a quick-fire double in the last two races, taking this prize with Gifts Of Gold (Cieren Fallon). He was the first winning favourite in this race since Landaman (2012) won for Mark Johnston. There have also been some shock results in a tricky finale including Illusive (2016) at 28-1 and Storm King (2017) at 25-1.
