Form & Verdict
Below best in first two outings this year but his recent Listed run was better and he has dropped a few pounds since his latest handicap run, when a close third at Haydock last September (5f, good to firm); needs a bit more now tackling a downhill track for the first time.

Said to prefer fast ground but he gave a barnstorming performance to win on good to soft on return at Windsor (5f); has not lived up to that effort since going up in the weights, including when third in the Dash at Epsom, but he did lead home his group at Ascot 17 days ago and may yet do better.

Has 6f form here but he acts particularly well at Windsor, having the rail to race against when making all for a convincing win there in June (6f); continued good run of form with a close second at Epsom (6f) since but this first-ever 5f run asks a question.

Just one turf handicap win, over 5f at Chester last August; had excellent AW season for new connections over the winter and although needing some excuses back on turf since, he did race alone when a creditable fifth to Celsius at Newmarket 18 days ago (5f, good to firm; in these aids, retained); needs very best form to win today.

Looked the likely winner from some way out on Newmarket return (5f, good to firm) but lost two shoes when never involved in the Dash at Epsom next time; things didn't fall his way but still a good fourth to Celsius on the July course since and he remains unexposed; fitting cheekpieces could help.

Got himself out of a tight spot to win the 3yo C&D handicap at this meeting in 2019; was never right in 2021 but has looked his old self with two 5f wins this season, at Ascot and Newmarket (both on good to firm); neither was emphatic but he's not the type to stretch away, his last five handicap wins coming by fairly narrow margins; looks good for another big run.

Verdict

Dusky Lord did not have quite the same luck in running as the winner CELSIUS at Newmarket recently but the latter, with his proven C&D form and his tendency to do things by halves, can show he is still ahead of the handicapper. Dusky Lord is likely to play a part but perhaps last year's winner Lord Riddiford can prove the main danger with this race likely to have been the aim for some time now. Equality, Stone Of Destiny and Embour are all capable of taking a hand on their good days.[Emily Weber]
