Form & Verdict
Not at his best over hurdles/fences last season for David Pipe; however, has had wind surgery since and he showed useful bumper form earlier in his career; could give a good account now back in this sphere on his stable debut (remains in same ownership).

The final leg of his four-timer for Brian Ellison two winters back was this race off 4lb lower than today; never fired on all cylinders last term but reappeared for new yard in November with a sparkling win, employing new tactics as he made all at Carlisle to come home 9l clear; back up 8lb, so needs to be back at his very best, but he's one for the shortlist.

Has had a patchy campaign and was pulled up in the Midland National last time; however, he showed some spark at Musselburgh (3m7f, good to soft) in February and is just 1lb higher than when winning the Eider at Newcastle (4m1f, heavy) last season; not ruled out now back down in trip/grade.

Runner-up in sole bumper in 2020 and he's since evolved into a highly talented hurdler and chaser; good second over fences at Huntingdon four weeks ago and he's a major player today.

Good ground suits but he's not the easiest to predict at the best of times and has run badly in all three races since his chase win at Aintree (3m1f, good) last May; had a second wind operation before penultimate start and was back hurdling for latest; well treated on best form but the chances of his reproducing it seem to be receding.

Won over fences here (2m, good) in June 2023 but was well beaten here on both starts this autumn (2m4f hurdle/3m chase); still has stamina to prove over this sort of trip and is 3lb wrong today; others preferred.

Two-time Tapeta winner elsewhere, in a Newcastle bumper in February 2021 and a Wolverhampton Flat maiden in December 2022; that's the positive, but his current form is a concern regarding today's claims.

Won over C&D in December and by 16l at Newcastle (extended 2m4f) in February, both from the front on good to soft; disappointing in his two runs in between and again on latest start but he was brought out quickly under a penalty in the latter; visor replaces his usual cheekpieces.

Won at Musselburgh (3m) in December and by 16l at Newcastle (extended 2m4f) last Thursday, both from the front on good to soft; disappointing in his two runs in between but he'd have a huge chance under this penalty if that form from last week (a narrow career best) is repeated.

Mostly struggled last season, best effort when a close second of four at Aintree (2m4f, soft) on Boxing Day but form slumped after and well held in a Class 2 at Uttoxeter (3m) in May on final start for Philip Kirby; on a good mark but needs the change of scenery to have revived him.

Verdict

The Nicky Henderson-trained CAPTAIN MORGS is a useful hurdler and chaser, and having shown promise in 2020 on his sole bumper run, he earns the vote. The 11yo Top Ville Ben isn’t as good as he was but may give the selection most to think about, while Anglers Crag won a bumper earlier in his career.[Ben Hutton]
