13.50 Goodwood Tips: Chesterfield Cup Handicap (4yo+) 1m2f

The meeting starts with a very competitive ten-furlong handicap and 13.50 Goodwood tips will cover a wide range of horses. The race saw a dominant winner last year in the shape of Migration, who won going away from runner-up Caradoc and third-placed Cockalorum. It was the first winner for William Buick, who went on to ride a further six winners to claim the Top Jockey accolade for the Festival.

14.25 Goodwood Tips: Vintage Stakes (2yo) (Group 2) 7f

The Vintage Stakes is often on the agenda for two-year-olds that ran well at Royal Ascot. The roll of honour makes impressive reading and includes Epsom Derby winners Troy (1978), Dr Devious (1991) and Sir Percy (2005) and 2000 Guineas winners Don’t Forget Me (1986), Mister Baileys (1993) and Galileo Gold (2015).

Vintage Stakes tips are likely to focus on those towards the head of the betting, with seven of the last ten favourites landing the race and no winner during that period going off at odds greater than 9/2. Angel Bleu ran out a game winner of the 2021 renewal, and then followed up in two Group 1’s in France to cap off a fantastic season.

15.00 Goodwood Tips: Lennox Stakes (3yo+) (Group 2) 7f

The Lennox Stakes is one of the top seven-furlong races of the season and always attracts a good quality field. David Elsworth’s Sir Dancealot (2018, 2019) became only the second horse to win the race twice following Nayyir (2002, 2003). Yet, Godolphin’s Space Blues prevented Sir Dancealot from completing the hat-trick when landing the 2020 renewal.

Last year’s race was a cracker, with less than a length seperating four in a thrilling finish. Angel Blue just edged out Creative Force (2nd), Happy Power (3rd) and last year’s winner Space Blues (4th).

If you have taken advantage of a Goodwood free bet offer, well-backed horses have a good record in the Lennox Stakes in recent years. Favourites or joint-favourites won for six of the eight seasons between 2011 and 2018. However, many Lennox Stakes tips were sunk when 50/1 outsider Breton Rock swept to victory in 2017.

15.35 Goodwood Tips: Goodwood Cup (3yo+) (Group 1) 2m

2020 Ascot Gold Cups

Can Stradivarius sign off his career with another Goodwood Cup?

The feature race on Day 1 of Glorious Goodwood – the Goodwood Cup. This year (like many before it) could see Stradivarius be the focus for punters, as he bids to sign off his glittering career with an unprecedented fifth win in the race.

Trueshan has beaten Stradivarius three times in his career and the deciding factor could be the ground. Trueshan will be all the rage if the ground comes up soft, but if it stays dry then he may find the imperious Stradivarius too strong.

Another name to throw in the mix is the newest entry to the Staying division – AP O’Brien’s Kyprios. He stormed onto the scene by winning the Ascot Gold Cup at the first time of stepping up to the longer trip and his chances again could depend on the ground – he has only been beaten twice in his career, both on soft ground.

Goodwood betting offers are likely to revolve around Stradivarius and his bid for a fifth victory in the race. The Goodwood Cup is usually a good race for favourites with Brown Panther (2013) at 13/2 being the longest priced winner in the past ten years.

16.10 Goodwood Tips: Nicholson Gin Handicap (4yo+) 5f

This is the first sprint handicap of Glorious Goodwood, home of the famous cavalry charge that is the Stewards’ Cup on Saturday. Lord Riddiford (13/2) led home El Astronaute (7/1) last year, continuing a trend that has made this one of the trickiest races for Goodwood day 1 tips. One angle into finding the winner, however, has been to back those towards the bottom of the handicap, with each of the last five winners carrying 9st or less.

16.45 Goodwood Tips: The British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes (2yo) 6f

Hollie Doyle won this race last year on Sisters In The Sky, trained by Roger Teal. That was her third winner of the day and capped off a memorable 122/1 treble for her, and undoubtedly made plenty of Hollie Doyle punters plenty of money! The market in two-year-old races can be a useful guide for your Goodwood tips as most winners were in the first three in the betting. There was one notable exception; Thechildren’strust won at 100-1 for Gary Moore and Hector Crouch in 2017!

17.20 Goodwood Tips: Fillies’ Handicap (3yo+) 1m

Anghaam took this race last year for the powerful Richard Hannon – Jim Crowley partnership. She was sent off at odds of 7/2, and there has now been just one winner of the race priced up at odds greater than 15/2 (Maid For Life 12/1 – 2019), something to bear in mind for anyone looking at Goodwood day 1 tips.

17.50 Goodwood Tips: World Pool EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakes (3yo+) 6f

Day 1’s finale is the World Pool EBF Fillies’ Handicap, a 6f handicap for horses rated 0-95. This is a new race to the Glorious Goodwood festival with this set to be its inaugural renewal.
