THURSDAY DOWN ROYAL TIPS – IRISH RACING BEST BETS 4 FEBRUARY
1:15 Down Royal – Molson Coors Maiden Hurdle (5yo+) 2m½f
DECIMATION might not too much of a price but the Milan gelding could take some beating and Henry de Bromhead’s charge can get off the mark at the fourth attempt.
The Gigginstown-owned runner has finished runner-up on each of his three starts thus far, latterly chasing home the potentially smart Wide Receiver at Leopardstown on Boxing Day where he was beaten just over one length.
The front two had pulled eight lengths clear of the rest and the application of a first-time tongue-tie could yield a chunk of improvement. He’s perhaps been unfortunate to bump into some well-touted rivals in his runs to date but he sets a decent standard and this looks a decent opportunity for him to open his win account.
1:50 Down Royal – Molson Coors Mares Handicap Hurdle (4yo+ 80-109) 2m½f
ALICE O’BYRNE was beaten a half-length by the reopposing Moonlight Glory when the pair met at Limerick over Christmas and Henry de Bromhead’s charge is fancied to turn the tables here.
The Vinnie Roe mare was giving the winner weight on that occasion, conceding 9lbs to Ed McCarthy’s charge and while he was unsuccessful he didn’t help his chance with a couple of late mistakes although he kept on well for the runner-up berth and finished clear of the third.
Henry de Bromhead’s charge meets his last-time conqueror on 5lbs better terms now with the respective riders’ claims cancelling each other out with both able to claim 5lbs. On these revised weights then the Vinnie Roe mare can thwart her rival’s hat-trick attempt by gaining some revenge here and she can strike a first win for the Meath handler.
3:00 Down Royal – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Rated Novice Chase (5yo+) 2m
ITSALONGLONGROAD has been in good fettle of late, scoring chase wins at Downpatrick last September and at Tramore on New Years’ Day and John McConnell’s charge can strike again here.
The Lawman gelding also proved his versatility in scoring on the all-weather at Dundalk in November where he scored in a claimer and the seven-year old ought to continue to give a good account here over fences.
Last seen beating Hell On Earth in a Tramore chase by almost two lengths he scored a shade readily on that occasion, needing kept up to his work. The front two had pulled ten lengths clear however and that form doesn’t look too bad with the fifth horse home winning since.
He’s up another 6lbs in the weights and stepping into what looks a deeper contest, but he could still have better to come over fences and with many of his rivals out of sorts he can continue his good spell with another win.
4:05 Down Royal – Molson Coors Handicap Chase (5yo+ 0-123) 3m
KAVANAGHS CORNER can get back to winning ways and the veteran Coroner gelding has been in good form this term.
A good fourth on his reappearance behind Chatham Street Lad at Ballinrobe back in October he ran out a narrow winner over Braeside on his next outing at Fairyhouse in November where he had three-parts of a length to spare over the runner-up.
That win came under this rider and he was arguably unlucky not to follow up at Limerick when last seen, still going well when making a bad mistake four out that saw his rider lose her irons and the blunder knocked the stuffing from him.
He eventually finished nine lengths’ third and the runner-up has since done little harm to the form with a couple of good runs and racing off the same mark he can give a good account in this competitive contest.
