SATURDAY IRISH HORSE RACING TIPS – BEST BETS AT NAVAN
1:22 Navan – Graigs Lane Maiden Hurdle (5yo+) 2m4f
Point-to-point winner FOLCANO has run well on both his starts over hurdles since joining Gordon Elliot, finishing fourth but shaping as if he’d be better for the run at this venue on his hurdles debut over course and distance in November.
That performance was subsequently bettered when he found only Flanking Manoeuvre to good at Fairyhouse earlier this month and that one wasn’t disgraced in a Grade One next time.
There’s likely better to come from him after just two starts over obstacles and he can get off the mark at the third attempt if finding another chunk of improvement on the back of that latest run.
1:57 Navan – Navan Handicap Hurdle (Grade B) (4yo+) 2m4f
AGUSTA GOLD struck her last win over hurdles over this course and distance and while she’s been campaigned over fences these past couple of campaigns the Gold Well mare is of interest back over timber.
Mags Mullins’ charge has proven a very useful and consistent chaser, winning at Thurles and holding her own in Graded company last term; she over came almost eleven months off when narrowly getting the better of Moyhenna at Fairyhouse earlier in the month and if she can translate her chase form back to hurdling she can go close.
Her last start over hurdles saw her finish in the runner-up berth in a Listed contest at Cheltenham off this mark and it would be no surprise to see her going close here.
3:07 Navan – Wilkinstown Beginners Chase (5yo+) 3m
DEFI BLEU was a winner over hurdles at this venue a couple of seasons ago after which he made the frame in a number of Graded contests which included the Martin Pipe Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
The Saddler Maker gelding returned from a lengthy absence to post a creditable third behind Blackbow over two miles at this venue in November and he was still in the mix when falling at Leopardstown over Christmas in the race won by January Jets.
He departed the race two out having largely jumped well until that point and if none the worse for that fall he could be worth chancing to bounce back here stepping up markedly in trip which shouldn’t present a problem given he placed over the distance over hurdles.
3:42 Navan – Gormanlough Handicap Chase (5yo+ 0-102) 3m
It has been a while since MIRACLE IN MEDINAH last got his head in front but the Milan gelding has made the frame in each of his last three starts and should continue to make his presence felt.
Gordon Elliott’s charge was last seen finishing third behind the reopposing Johnnys Girl at Limerick over Christmas where he was trying to concede more than two stones in weight to that rival who ran out a five lengths’ victor.
The runner-up in that contest has won since to give the form a boost and the ten-year old might be able to overturn that form here on revised terms and going back up in trip.
