Coral Cup Tips – novice set to upstage older brigade
Coral Cup Tips
Daryl Carter (@DarylCarter7) gives the latest of his Cheltenham day 2 tips here as he runs the rule over the Coral Cup, one of the Cheltenham Festival’s toughest handicaps to solve
At this stage the Coral Cup has 148 entries, but here I’ve taken a close look at the top end of the market to try to identify the winner.
Coral Cup Tips – All To Do
BIRCHDALE has been seen only once this term, when beaten 32 lengths in a novice chase by stablemate Angels Breath in November, and a change of plan was immediately put into effect with connections targeting this race.
However, he looks on a stiff mark for what he’s achieved in his short career, and will likely come here fresh, which could be cause for concern. He’s not one to be adding to your Cheltenham tips
Plotting Path To Festival Glory
A helping hand from the British handicapper could get COLUMN OF FIRE in towards the bottom of the weights here. He sits on an Irish mark of 136 but will likely run off 140-(ish).
He has been given plenty of quiet rides this season, finishing in the frame in his races but not enough to gain too much attention. His best effort came last time out over 3m when given far too much to do on the run in and he is likely one of the many plot jobs running in this race at the Cheltenham Festival.
Top Novice One To Watch Out For
PROTEKTORAT has won only once in his eight hurdle starts but has significant experience for a novice and some of his form has worked out remarkably well.
He almost certainly has more to offer over this trip and is worth keeping on the right side of with plenty of Cheltenham course experience under his belt and rates the best of the novice entries at this stage.
May Find One Too Good
CIEL DE NEIGE was just denied in the Betfair Hurdle and has been given a handicap rise of just 3lb for that run. He did the best of those ridden prominently so his performance can be upgraded and he is a likeable type, but this trip might just stretch him.
Not Hard To Find Eldorado
ELDORADO ALLEN has disappointed since returning from an absence and has been pitched into decent company on his two runs this season, but he retains an air of class about him.
A handicap mark of 150 is unlikely to underestimate him on what we have seen and it would come as no surprise should he prove good enough to win off it. Risky proposition but has an unexposed profile and coule well be worth taking advantage of some of your Cheltenham Free Bets.
Irish raider Could Go Well
STRATUM won the Cesarewitch at 25/1 in 2019 and is worth a mention here. A winner of two of his nine starts over hurdles, he must be taken seriously off a handicap mark of 145 and there is every chance he can go well in this for trainer Willie Mullins.
Coral Cup Tips – Big-race Verdict
It’s difficult to pin any horse down but Protektorat needs to be taken seriously with improvement still to come over this longer trip.
