IRISH POSEIDON showed some fair form when trained in Germany and the Poseidon Adventure gelding showed he could still have better to come on his first start for new handler Matthew Smith.

Having ended his time in Germany with two wins from his final three starts he ran well over ten furlongs here earlier in the month when denied only a neck behind Romann despite not being ideally placed in the race following a tardy start.

The handicapper has only pushed him up 1lb for that run and likely to be sharper now given it was his first outing in almost four months he can improve on that performance with this extra yardage in his favour.

Mick Halford has his string in good form and his runners here are always worthy of respect; it could be worth siding then with EAGLE’S FLIGHT to get off the mark at the sixth attempt having appeared to find some further progress over course and distance latest.

The Gleneagles colt had shown ability previously in maiden company on turf, but he latterly found only one too good on his polytrack debut last month when beaten less than two lengths behind Party Season and he could be capable of going one place better if building again on that effort.

With the yard in decent fettle at present he can make his presence felt and no surprise to see him involved at the business end.

Zozimus sets the bar fairly high in this contest but he’s had a few chances and it might be worthwhile taking a chance on SHACKLETON HERO to improve back on polytrack having looked unsuited by the heavy ground latest.

Joseph O’Brien’s charge had run promisingly over this course on debut in early-October where he looked in need of the experience in finishing sixth behind Hale Bopp. He then ran better than the bare result when possibly doing too much in front when next seen at Gowran Park, fading into third having tried to make all.

He had a subsequent winner behind him that day and while the overall form perhaps isn’t the strongest there might be more to come from him and this extra furlong back on a quicker surface may help him to produce some further progress.

CHAGALL got back to winning ways on turf at Cork in August and the Slade Power gelding has been in good form since returning to the all-weather, winning over course and distance in September and making the frame in all three subsequent outings.

Ed Lynam’s charge was latterly nutted on the line by Legal Thriller over course and distance late last month, beaten a short-head but he could be capable of going one better here from just 1lb higher in the weights.

He looks sure to mount another bold bid despite likely being taken on for the lead; but he should remain competitive and no surprise if he were to make his presence felt once more in this contest.
