Frankie Dettori’s Top 3 Glorious Goodwood Rides
Glorious Goodwood begins next week and one rider who has enjoyed particular success at the meeting in recent years has been one Frankie Dettori. Dettori’s trademark flying dismount has been seen in action multiple times at the West Sussex venue in recent years, and punters will be hoping for more Dettori magic at Goodwood next week.
In anticipation of what promises to be an excellent week’s racing, here at Racing Tips we have delved through the meeting – identifying Frankie Dettori’s top 3 chances of success at Glorious Goodwood 2021.
Stradivarius – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Tuesday 27th, 3:35pm)
Frankie Dettori appears to hold outstanding claims of a day 1 Glorious Goodwood success courtesy of Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup. Stradivarius has confirmed himself as the stayer of his generation, winning three Gold Cups and the last four renewals of this Group 1 event.
Stradivarius could only muster fourth-place when bidding for a record-equalling fourth straight Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last month, but there were legitimate excuses for that defeat, and now back at a venue where he is currently 4/4, and with no Subjectivist to contend with, he looks good value at around the 13/8 mark.
Magical Morning – Unibet Golden Mile Handicap (Friday 30th, 3:00pm)
Magical Morning deservedly got himself back in the winner’s enclosure at Sandown last time out, bravely fending off the challenge of Maydanny. He won that race in the style of a well-handicapped horse, and therefore it is no real surprise to see him so prominent in the market for the Golden Mile Handicap – one of the highlights on Glorious Goodwood day 4.
Magical Morning has a three-pound penalty to contend with for that aforementioned Sandown success, but that still leaves him two pounds well in on his revised mark. Frankie Dettori has now been aboard for all three of the four-year-old’s victories, and he is expected to retain the ride at Glorious Goodwood next week.
Age is certainly in Magical Morning’s favour, with three of the last five renewals of the Golden Mile going the way of a four-year-old. With this in mind, it is probably no great surprise to see the gelding trading at a single figure price.
Arecibo – Unibet Stewards’ Cup (Saturday 31st, 3:35pm)
Whilst Stradivarius would arguably provide Dettori with his most emotional Glorious Goodwood 2021 success, Arecibo would be a welcome winner in the Stewards’ Cup – the feature race on Glorious Goodwood day 5 – and a race won by Dettori in two of the past six seasons (Magical Memory 2015, Lancelot Du Lac 2017).
Frankie rode Arecibo to victory at Newmarket earlier this season. Jamie Spencer has been aboard the six-year-old the last twice, including for his Group 1 King’s Stand 2nd, yet Spencer looks likely to be aboard Chiefofchiefs here, leaving Dettori free to regain familiarities with Arecibo.
That runner-up finish in the King’s Stand represents the strongest piece of form in this race, and a subsequent 2nd to Came From The Dark was also far from a disappointing performance. At around the 14/1 mark, Arecibo appears to provide Dettori with a decent chance of enhancing his already impressive recent Stewards’ Cup record.
