2:15pm Ffos Las Braceys Maiden Hurdle (Class 4) 2m4f

Leroy Brown has to be in with a chance, but based on his flat form, he has a little catching up to do to deny JACK VALENTINE (NAP) (6/4 William Hill), who should relish this extended trip on softer ground which is sure to suit.

A runner-up on his only start on the flat in Ireland, Jack Valentine made a nice impression on debut for Venetia Williams, making all and hanging tough in the closing stages to secure a narrow victory in a bumper at Uttoxeter. Being by Scorpion, Williams’ six-year-old should take well to jumping obstacles and his dam has produced a winning hurdler. He could be one to follow over the coming months.

3:35pm Catterick Racing Again 17th December Intermediate Open National Hunt Flat Race (Class 5) 1m7½f

Misstree Song heads the betting here and could be hard to beat on her first start under rules. I, however, would rather side with COCKNEY BEAU (NB) (5/1 William Hill) who ran really nicely behind an odds-on favourite of Nicky Henderson’s on debut back in the summer and could build on that experience here at Catterick.

Father John was expected to brush his rivals aside with ease up at Hexham, but Beckie Smith and Cockney Beau gave the favourite a real fright, passing the leader with a furlong to travel before Father John asserted in the final 100 yards. Micky Hammond is enjoying an excellent season with his bumper horses, registering three winners and three placers from his nine runners in NHF contests so far. I’m expecting another hugely competitive display.
