2:10pm Hexham Esther Sidgwick Memorial Novices’ Handicap Chase (Class 4) 2m
At a glance, this looks a fairly average bunch of novice chasers and there’s little to whet the appetite. However, if you dig a little deeper into FIRST ACCOUNT’S (NAP) form over hurdles last season, there’s plenty of reason for Donald McCain to be excited as to what he could achieve over the larger obstacles.
First Account was unlucky to run into two smart novices on his hurdling debut at Carlisle, finishing five lengths behind Al Dancer and four behind runner-up Windsor Avenue. Jonjo O’Neill’s Tedham came home five lengths behind First Account and he’s gone on to reach a rating of 130 over hurdles. Captain Zebo proved too strong a stayer to catch as McCain’s charge finished second on his second outing, but First Account still managed to cross the line some 15 lengths clear of beaten favourite, One For Rosie.
On his sole start for top point-to-point handler Colin Bowe, this five-year-old son of Malinas quickened clear decisively to win by six lengths. First Account is easily the most progressive novice chaser in this modest field and I’m hoping he will prove his quality on Friday.
