Friday’s Sandown tips – Picks for every race on day one of the Tingle Creek Festival

Brian Healy gives his Friday Sandown tips for every race on day one of the fantastic Tingle Creek Festival meeting featuring the Winter Novices' Hurdle.

The first of two excellent days’ horse racing action goes to post as the Tingle Creek Festival gets underway at Sandown on Friday, and the opening day boasts a six-race card spearheaded by the Grade Two Ballymore Winter Novices’ Hurdle.

12:45 – Pinsent Masons Introductory Juvenile Hurdle Cl2 (3yo) 2m
1:20 – JSC Communications Supports Insurance Industry Raceday Handicap Chase Cl3 (4yo+ 0-125) 1m7½f
1:55 – Simon Jennings Memorial Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase Cl3 (4yo+ 0-135) 2m4f
2:25 – Ballymore Winter Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m4f
2:55 – Sandown Park Amateur Riders’ Handicap Chase Cl3 (4yo+ 0-130) 3m
3:30 – IIRD Supports Motor Neurone Disease Association Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Cl4 (3yo+ 0-120) 2m

The feature race could well through up a potential Cheltenham Festival candidate, and recent past winners of this classy Grade Two over 2m 4f include On The Blind Side, Vyta Du Roc, Taquin de Seuil and Fingal Bay since the turn of the decade.

Brian Healy takes a look at all six races on the day one racecard, and he gives his race-by-race selections for the Friday afternoon action at the Esher track.

12:45 – Pinsent Masons Introductory Juvenile Hurdle Cl2 (3yo) 2m

A useful sort on the flat, GOSHEN (8/11, Bet365) ran out a very impressive debut winner over hurdles at Fontwell last month, and with the potential for improvement to come then Gary Moore’s charge can make it two wins from two starts over timber.

The Authorized gelding arrives here bidding for his fifth straight win across both flat and hurdles, reeling off a three-timer on the level which included at this venue; and he had more than twenty lengths to spare at the line when routing four rivals last month when demolishing Manucci and others.

The bare form is nothing special, but he couldn’t have been more impressive in the way he travelled through the race despite jumping markedly right a couple of times before readily asserting to win tidily.

He should come on for that experience, and going this way round will surely help; and while this is a deeper race he could be one to keep on the right side of with the potential for further improvement to come.

DAREBIN (8/1, William Hill) has a decent record at this venue with three wins and three places from eleven starts here, and the It’s Gino gelding can follow up his recent return to winning form at Kempton last month where Gary Moore’s charge scored by three-parts of a length over Prairie Town.

A thee-time winner last term, including over course and distance in January, he rounded off last campaign with a Plumpton walk-over, and following a couple of pipe-openers he registered that latest success where he made all the running before keeping on well to score with the front pair pulling clear of the remainder.

The third from that contest has won since, and a 4lbs rise remains workable so it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see him remain competitive from this mark back at this venue, and he can double up on his win tally for the season under Jamie Moore who sides with the seven-year old over the yard’s other runner in the race.

Darebin can strike again back at Sandown where he has a good record.

1:55 – Simon Jennings Memorial Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase Cl3 (4yo+ 0-135) 2m4f

MY WAY (9/2, Bet365) was set to go close at Plumpton on his chase debut when falling at the last fence, but Paul Nicholls’ charge can bounce back from that mishap to get off the mark at the second attempt.

The Martaline gelding was useful in France when trained by Francois Nicolle, making the frame four times over fences prior to joining this yard where he shaped with promise in a handful of hurdles outings although he ultimately failed to land a win.

He had been thought worthy of a crack at the Winter Novices’ Hurdle on this card on his debut for the Ditcheat handler, and he had largely jumped well on his chase debut on his reappearance from more than six months off the track and wind surgery.

He fell whilst in front, holding a slender advantage but still looking as if he had plenty of running under him; but he ought to strip fitter, and he could be worth giving another chance to with the experience under his belt despite his failure to complete the course.

2:25 – Ballymore Winter Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m4f

Unbeaten OVER THE TOP (11/4, Coral) bids to extend his perfect record since joining this yard, and the Flemensfirth gelding can continue on the winning trail here.

A Warwick bumper winner back in April having won between the flags prior to teaming up with Olly Murphy, he stepped up on that performance when making a winning return to action on his hurdles debut at Carlisle back in October where he ran out a twelve lengths’ winner over Champagne Noir.

He made a couple of errors with his jumping, but he looked a class apart from a fairly ordinary field and while that form hasn’t really stood up thus far, he could well find significant improvement for the experience to follow up here.

He is one of four last-time winners in the race, and while he concedes hurdling experience to all but one of his rivals, he can step up on that latest success to maintain his unbeaten record in an open renewal of this Grade Two contest.

2:55 – Sandown Park Amateur Riders’ Handicap Chase Cl3 (4yo+ 0-130) 3m

PLANTAGENET (7/2, Bet365) almost took advantage of an enterprise front-running ride at Cheltenham in October under Gina Andrews, and Seamus Mullins’ charge was arguably unlucky having blundered badly at the second last where his rider briefly lost an iron.

That mistake was sufficient enough to halt momentum from which he couldn’t quite recover although he kept on well for second and could well go one better here.

That winner has gone in again since, and the Midnight Legend gelding turns out here only 4lbs higher in the weights following that Cheltenham performance, and he could still have scope from this mark despite it being a current career-high rating.

Hopefully the ground won’t cut up too badly with rain forecast, but assuming conditions don’t deteriorate markedly then he looks to hold solid claims of making a return to the winning circle here.

Plantagenet can get back on the scoresheet following a good effort at Cheltenham last time out.

3:30 – IIRD Supports Motor Neurone Disease Association Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Cl4 (3yo+ 0-120) 2m

POP THE CORK (4/1, Ladbrokes) showed some fair form on the flat, but since switching to hurdling following five months off the track Jonjo O’Neill’s charge has shown improved form, getting off the mark at the second attempt.

He had chased home the reopposing Guardia Top on his debut over timber at Perth in September where he was trying to give that rival 4lbs at the weights following the claim of rider Jonjo O’Neill Jr, and he was beaten five lengths in a race where he may just have needed the run and racing a shade too keenly for his own good.

That winner has improved, registering a subsequent win and runner-up effort in his next two outings; but now tried in a handicap he could be fairly treated on these terms with the prospect of improvement despite giving his last-time conquerer further weight and his rider being unable to claim.

He won readily latest at Uttoxeter, and with the potential for better to come he could well prove the answer here in a trappy finale.
