TRAWLERMAN (Jorvik Handicap – Wednesday 11th May 1:50pm) 5/1
We start things off with TRAWLERMAN in the opener for John & Thady Gosden. He could hardly have been more impressive when bolting up at Pontefract last season, and a repeat of that effort should see him win here.
He had previously had one race over the distance on the all-weather at Wolverhampton, but that was his first race for four months and he did well to finish third in the circumstances. He then went to Pontefract and led from pillar to post, in a convincing win. After that, the decision to drop him back to 10 furlongs seemed a strange one and he struggled to make any impression in the Classic Trial at Sandown on his final run of the season.
He made a winning return this season, getting the better of U S S Michigan in a thrilling finish at Chelmsford last month. That run should have blown away any cobwebs, and a bold bid can be expected from him here.
MINZAAL (Duke Of York Stakes – Wednesday 11th May 3pm) 5/1
Next up we’re siding with MINZAAL for Owen Burrows. He finished ahead of a lot of these rivals in the Champions Sprint Stakes at the end of last season and we’re hoping for a similar outcome on Wednesday.
He has a fine record over this distance, having won two of his five races over this trip and placed on two of the others. The two races he placed in were in Group 1 company too so this Group 2 should be well within his capabilities. His third in the Champions Sprint Stakes is arguably some of the best form on offer here and a repeat performance would see him go close on Wednesday.
Trainer Owen Burrows has a fine record at York, with 50% of the 22 horses he’s sent to the course finishing in the top three – four of those winning. Minzaal’s sole visit to York resulted in a comfortable win in the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes last season over course and distance.
Jim Crowley has ridden him in five of his six races, and is booked to ride him again here. The top jockey has won two of the last six renewals of the race, so that’s a further positive for our pick. Providing he arrives fully fit, he should be in with a big shout of winning this.
NASHWA (Musidora Stakes – Wednesday 11th May 3:35pm) 5/1
The Musidora is next on the acca and we’re siding with Gosden’s second string NASHWA. She bolted up at Haydock last month on reappearance and a repeat of that run will see her go close here.
The Frankel Filly couldn’t have been more impressive in the way she pulled clear of her rivals at Haydock, finishing over six lengths clear of stablemate Wonderful Times and the rest of the field. She showed a serious turn of foot that day and looked to have plenty left in the tank, so this step up in trip shouldn’t be an issue. She’s entered in the Oaks in June so connections will be hoping for a big run in this before going on to her main target.
Trainer John Gosden has an excellent record in the race, winning five of the last eleven renewals. He will have to be at his best to beat talented stablemate Emily Upjohn, but if she has an off day there’s every chance Nashwa will be there to take advantage of any mistakes.
KYPRIOS (Yorkshire Cup Stakes – Friday 13th May 3:35pm) 10/1
We round off the acca with KYPRIOS in the Yorkshire Cup. John Gosden’s colt stepped up to 1m 4f on his reappearance run and looked hugely impressive. If he can handle the extra couple of furlongs here, he’s sure to go close.
After almost a year off the track, he scooted clear to win in Listed company at Navan last month, comfortably beating Irish St Leger winner Search For A Song in the process. The duo pulled well clear of the rest of the field and if anything, Kyprios pulled further clear the further they went. That performance should have connections confident he can handle the step up in trip here.
We’re banking on Kyprios turning up here before potentially going for the Group 1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. In order for him to stand a chance of winning the Gold Cup, he would have to go close here and providing he does race in this, he could prove a serious threat to Trueshan and co!
