IRISH RACING BEST BETS – MONDAY TIPS FOR THURLES
2:30 Thurles – Racing Again February 25th Handicap Chase (5yo+) 2m½f
HELL ON EARTH improved markedly on his chase debut at Tramore back in October to chase home Itsalonglongroad at that venue on New Years’ Day and the Germany gelding can open his account here.
Gordon Elliott’s charge was an early casualty when last seen tacking a better race at Punchestown last month where he was one of the horses involved in the melee caused by Castlegrange. That incident saw several runners carried off the track including the selection.
He’d been fancied for that contest and now making his handicap debut from a mark that doesn’t look harsh he might be able to get off the mark under his 7lbs claiming rider.
3:05 Thurles – thurles.ie Maiden Hurdle (5yo+) 2m
SCHONE AUSSICHT was a French flat winner for her previous yard and the Pastorious mare has shaped well on both her runs over hurdles following her move to Henry de Bromhead.
Having finished fifth of 19 behind Delvino at Naas on her first run over obstacles she showed the benefit of that experience to post a very good third behind Roseys Hollow next time out at Fairyhouse. That form has since been boosted by the winner landing a Grade Three contest while the fifth horse home also won next time out.
Likely to have further improvement to come she can take another forward step here where she can open her win account at the third attempt.
3:35 Thurles – Horse & Jockey Rated Novice Hurdle (5yo+) 2m4f
Lightly-raced CAPODANNO can follow up his recent Clonmel success back over this longer trip and the Manduro gelding could go on progressing for a while yet.
Runner-up in a French hurdle prior to joining this yard he made a good first impression for Willie Mullins at Clonmel in December following more than a year off when crossing the line in third behind Pepite De Belle.
That performance was bettered when he ran out a comfortable winner latest, showing the benefit of that run to beat Dunboyne by seven lengths where he was strong at the finish and this return to a longer trip is unlikely to present an issue.
He could have more to offer and with trainer and jockey both in good form it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see the lightly-raced five-year old turn in another winning performance.
4:10 Thurles – Holycross Maiden Hurdle (5yo+) 2m7f
MERCURY LANE looks a progressive individual and Paul Nolan’s charge can get off the mark here.
Placed in a point-to-point for Colin Bowe prior to joining this yard he twice finished third in bumper outings before his attentions were switched to hurdles for his latest couple of starts.
The Stowaway gelding has finished runner-up on both occasions, latterly beaten just a half-length behind Velvet Elvis when stepped up to this trip and he can continue his improvement to deliver another big performance that could yield a first career success.
