Irish St Leger Preview – Our 1-2-3 Prediction For Sunday’s Feature At The Curragh
Day two of Irish Champions weekend and there’s a huge FOUR Group 1’s, including the Irish St Leger. We’ve studied the eleven runners and give our verdict on who we expect to come out on top.
Can Kyprios justify odds-on favouritism? Or can another runner cause an upset?
Find out who we’re siding with in our 1-2-3 prediction for the race ↓
1st – Kyprios
Two-time Group 1 star KYPRIOS drops back down in trip here, but he’s comfortably clear on ratings and can confirm his superiority by running out a comfortable winner of this.
Since stepping up to 1m 6f +, he has won all four of his races, including the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup. He comfortably beat Search For A Song on his first effort at this trip, before bolting up in the Levmoss Stakes.
He then stepped up in trip to confirm himself as the new star of the staying division, beating the likes of Trueshan and Stradivarius in the process. Both Group 1 wins were over further than he will face in this but the drop down in trip shouldn’t be an issue and he is without a doubt the one to beat.
Aidan O’Brien hasn’t won the race since 2018, but in Kyprios he has a fantastic chance of giving the top Irish trainer a sixth Irish St Leger victory.
2nd – Raise You
RAISE YOU has been a revelation since stepping up in trip, and although he may be no match for Kyprios, he looks comfortably better than the rest here and can chase home A P O’Brien’s staying star.
Joseph O’Brien’s runner has won three of his four races since stepping up to 1m 4f+, and the only blemish on that run was when he blew the start (he still finished second). He was a comfortable winner of the St Leger Trial race last month, when finishing clear of Search For A Song, and although this is a marked step up in class he deserves a go at it and isn’t in here to just make up the numbers.
Kyprios is already a Group 1 star and should have the beating of Raise You, but Joseph O’Brien’s runner will give him the most to think about and should be the one chasing him home down the straight.
3rd – Search For A Song
2019 & 2020 Irish St Leger winner SEARCH FOR A SONG tends to save her best efforts for the Curragh and she’s more than capable of finishing in the places in this year’s renewal. Both Kyprios and Raise You have beaten her already this year, and we don’t see that form reversing.
She failed to follow up last year when sent off as favourite, eventually finishing a distant sixth, but she has been running well this year and a place isn’t out of reach. Her most recent runner-up in the Irish St Leger Trial was a solid effort, and proved she is capable of a big run still, particularly at the Curragh.
She may be no match for the two at the head of the betting, but she’s probably the best of the rest here and is a cracking E/W price. She might not be the same horse as when winning this race two years in a row, but she is better than a lot of her rivals and shouldn’t be as big as 16/1.
