Brian Healy gives his ITV Racing tips for Saturday where the day’s live TV action come from Wolverhampton and Ayr.

The weather has wiped out Saturday’s Imperial Cup racecard at Sandown forcing ITV Racing into a reshuffle and there are six races to be shown live with action from Ayr over the sticks and also Wolverhampton on the all-weather.

1:35 Wolverhampton – Bombardier Golden Beer Lincoln Trial Handicap Cl2 (4yo+ 0-105) 1m½f
1:55 Ayr – Tennent’s Light Handicap Chase Cl3 (5yo+ 0-135) 2m½f
2:10 Wolverhampton – Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap Cl2 (4yo+ 0-105) 6f
2:30 Ayr – Heverlee Mares’ Handicap Hurdle (Qual’ For Northern Lights Mares’ Hurdle) (Ayrshire Yeomanry Cup) Cl4 (4yo+ 0-120) 2m5½f

3:05 Ayr – Tennent’s Lager Handicap Hurdle (For The Craigie Cup) Cl3 (4yo+ 0-140) 2m4½f

The Listed Lady Wulfruna Stakes is the highlight of the afternoon on the Wolverhamton tapeta; while there is competitive handicap action going to post at Ayr.

Saturday’s broadcast will feature three races from each venue and Ed Chamberlain and the team will have their usual expert tips, insights and post-race analysis on all the action before they head to the Cheltenham Festival; while Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for the day’s live TV racing.

ITV RACING TIPS FOR SATURDAY 7 MARCH AT A GLANCE

1:35 Wolverhampton – RATHBONE (10/1, Bet365)
1:55 Ayr – CLAN LEGEND (11/4, William Hill)
2:10 Wolverhampton – CONCIERGE (4/1, Bet365)
2:30 Ayr – ULTERIOR MOTIVES (7/1, Bet365)
2:45 Wolverhampton – GULLIVER (13/2, Paddy Power)
3:05 Ayr – THE CON MAN (11/4, Bet365)

1:35 Wolverhampton – Bombardier Golden Beer Lincoln Trial Handicap Cl2 (4yo+ 0-105) 1m½f

Quite a competitive race to kick-start Saturday’s live TV action and RATHBONE (10/1, Bet365) could be worth chancing to go one better than his recent runner-up efforts the last twice.

The Foxwedge gelding was a dual-winner on turf last spring, scoring wins at Pontefract and Leicester before tackling more valuable handicaps where he cut little ice which includes in the Ayr Silver Cup.

His two recent starts have come following a break and he has found only one too good each time, latterly denied only by a neck at Newcastle behind Sanaadh. That came over seven furlongs, but he shaped as if worth a try at this longer trip and unexposed still on the all-weather there might be further improvement still to come.

He was only run down late last time and that race has since thrown up a winner. A 2lbs higher mark for this outing may not halt his progression and he can post another big run here from a handy draw.

1:55 Ayr – Tennent’s Light Handicap Chase Cl3 (5yo+ 0-135) 2m½f

CLAN LEGEND (11/4, William Hill) hasn’t disgraced himself in recent outings, winning at Kelso in December and then making the frame in subsequent outings at Haydock and Wetherby last month.

Nicky Alexander’s Midnight Legend gelding was beaten just over four lengths’ behind Nuts Well in that last outing and he had pulled clear of the third. That form looks fair and he can race from the same mark here so he could go close with a repeat of that effort.

A consistent sort, he is no stranger to the winners’ enclosure here as a dual course-and-distance winner and he ought to go well hear back down in trip having perhaps just been stretched last time.

2:10 Wolverhampton – Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap Cl2 (4yo+ 0-105) 6f

CONCIERGE (4/1, Bet365) gained some reward for several consistent efforts in defeat when scoring over course and distance twelve days ago and David Loughnane’s charge could be worth chancing to strike again.

The Society Rock gelding was ending a losing run stretching back to October 2016 when beating Reeves by almost two lengths latest and a subsequent 6lbs rise in the weights leaves him fairly treated on the pick of his historic form.

He’s 3-4 under Sylvestre De Sousa who again takes the reins for this contest and he won his only previous start at this venue so there’s a lot to like about his chances. His latest win was coming and if continuing with his current good spell then he could go in again here.

2:30 Ayr – Heverlee Mares’ Handicap Hurdle (Qual’ For Northern Lights Mares’ Hurdle) (Ayrshire Yeomanry Cup) Cl4 (4yo+ 0-120) 2m5½f

ULTERIOR MOTIVES (7/1, Bet365) has been a generally consistent sort since joining this yard from the Irish point-to-point sphere, getting off the mark at the fourth attempt over hurdles with a victory at Sedgefield where the Stowaway mare ran out a two lengths’ winner over Clondaw Pretender.

Martin Todhunter’s charge failed to back up that win next time over the same course and distance, but there is a feeling the run came too soon just nine days on from her victory and she’s been given more of a break this time.

Back in a handicap against her own sex, she could bounce back from that run last time out and no surprise if she were to make her presence felt here for all she probably needs to find a shade more improvement.

2:45 Wolverhampton – Bombardier British Hopped Amber Beer Lady Wulfruna Stakes (Listed Race) (AW Champ’ Fast-Track Qual’) Cl1 (4yo+) 7f

GULLIVER (13/2, Paddy Power) could be worth chancing to bounce back having been a shade unlucky when last seen out behind Dark Pursuit in the Group Three Dukhan Sprint at Doha last month.

The Sayif gelding had won both previous starts, winning the Coral Sprint at York before showing his versatility returning from almost four months off to beat Wasntexpectingthat on the Southwell fibresand.

David O’Meara’s charge was also only beaten one length into third in last season’s Ayr Gold Cup and he perhaps spoiled his chance when last seen out with a slow start. It might be worth forgiving him that effort and the longer trip here won’t prove an issue given he’s won twice over this distance in the past.

Jason Hart has three wins and a placed effort from five rides on board the six-year old and well-drawn in the number three stall he can get competitive in this Listed contest.

3:05 Ayr – Tennent’s Lager Handicap Hurdle (For The Craigie Cup) Cl3 (4yo+ 0-140) 2m4½f

Formerly smart chaser The Dutchman makes his first start for almost 700 days and is perhaps worth watching on his debut for Tristan Davidson; but THE CON MAN (11/4, Bet365) can get back on the winning trail faced with an easier test than last time out.

Donald McCain’s Oscar gelding won two of his four starts over hurdles following his switch to this yard from the Irish point-to-point sphere, winning on debut at Carlisle and then getting back on the winning trail following successive runner-up efforts when scoring at Kelso in January.

He wasn’t disgraced in finishing fifth behind Nordano at Ascot on his last start, no match for the winner but crossing the line only around three lengths adrift of the runner-up and easing back slightly in grade from the same mark he may be able to get back on the scoresheet under title-chasing Brian Hughes.
