Loader’s Lucky 15 – Four horses to back at Newcastle

Newcastle Races All-WeatherNewcastle Races All-Weather

Chris Loader rolls his four best bets of the day on the all-weather at Newcastle into this Lucky 15 on Saturday 15th February.

Storm Dennis looks to cause havoc this weekend with the possibility of many abandonments across the UK. However the only cause not currently holding an inspection is Newcastle who might not get the worst of the weather.

I’ve rolled four of my best bets on the card into a Lucky 15 for Racing Tips, where we have our fingers crossed that the meeting goes ahead.

Saturday’s Lucky 15

Groveman (6/1 Unibet) is going to hopefully our first selection on the card who is a useful dual purpose horse for Jedd O’Keefe. The five-year-old has already been mixing it on the jumps over hurdles so will arrive at Gosforth park with fitness under his belt. When looking at his flat form he’s on a workable mark of 82 and has made the frame despite remaining a maiden on the all weather. On paper this doesn’t look the most competitive of races and the likely favourite Ice Pyramid might be vulnerable after a hard race at Lingfield on his latest start. I expect Groveman to be a massive danger that I will be keeping on side.

Portledge (3/1 Unibet) made an encouraging return for James Bethell on his latest start at Newcastle. That was the six-year-olds first very since last summer and he’s been a horse that has often needed their first run after a layoff. Despite maybe being a little high in the weights I don’t think this same is up to much as some of the opposition have question marks over the track and recent form. If PJ McDonald can get into a good position early on he might just be the one to come out on top.

Defence Girl

I am not one for normally betting in these kind of races, but Defence Girl (6/5 Paddy Power) might be one just worth siding with tonight. This daughter of First Defence makes the long trip up to Newcastle for Simon Crisford, who’s runners are yielding a 44% strike rate in Britain this year, which a stat to take note of. Furthermore Crisford has a far record at Newcastle with three-year-olds being 26%. I am really keen to go against the likely favourite Rideson who’s been beaten easily and doesn’t look up to a battle. I’m hoping Defence Girl can be her conqueror.

Gunmaker (3/1 Ladbrokes) has been frustrating for punters on his last few starts when well fancied for Ruth Carr. However I am going to back him today as I have a feeling that today can be his day. On his last start he just denied victory in the final strides at Newcastle after doing little wrong. If you go back through his form he’s extremely well handicapped of his current mark of 55. If he can continue to find his resurgent form he should be in the mix up again.
