Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for the third day of the Dubai World Cup Carnival meeting at Meydan.

It is week three of the Dubai World Cup Carnival on Thursday, and six races head to post at the premier Emirates track headed by the Group Two Cape Verdi which goes to post at 4.15pm as the fourth race of the afternoon.

2:30 – Riviera 2 (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-105) 6f
3:05 – Al Furjan (Handicap) (Dirt) (3yo+ 90-108) 6f
3:40 – Zabeel Turf Sponsored By Riviera 1 (Listed Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 95-112) 1m2f
4:15 – Cape Verdi Sponsored By Creek Views (Group 2) (Fillies & Mares) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m

5:25 – Aliyah (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-110) 1m

Brian Healy takes a race-by-race look at the Thursday racecard at Meydan where he gives his race-by-race selections on another quality week of action in the Emirates.

2:30 – Riviera 2 (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-105) 6f

ALMANAARA (6/1, Ladbrokes) has plenty of good, solid form at this venue on both dirt and turf, and Doug Watson’s charge can strike again quickly having won over five furlongs at this venue on week one of the Carnival with a defeat of Caspian Prince.

The Shamardal entire had almost two lengths to spare on that occasion, and a 6lbs rise in the weights for that success doesn’t look harsh as he returns to six furlongs where he can give another good account.

The longer trip is of no concern, and he has the plum draw from the number one box so another big effort could be looming and he can strike again.

Jim Crowley can get week three of Meydan’s Dubai World Cup Carnival off to a winning start.

3:05 – Al Furjan (Handicap) (Dirt) (3yo+ 90-108) 6f

DESERT DOCTOR (15/2, William Hill) could be worth chancing having returned from three months off the track to find only Reeves too strong at Wolverhampton when last seen, and Ed Walker’s charge can give a good account.

The Society Rock gelding has seven wins from 16 all-weather starts, and he has made the frame on four other occasions. He was latterly beaten only a half-length in his latest start, finishing off well having perhaps just been given too much to do.

He competes here from the same mark as that latest outing, and the form has since been boosted by the winner going in again next time out so he could be worth chancing to post a big effort here if handling the switch to dirt.

3:40 – Zabeel Turf Sponsored By Riviera 1 (Listed Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 95-112) 1m2f

Godolphin accounts for six of the eleven runners who go to post for this contest, and DESERT FIRE (6/1, Bet365) could be the one to side with under Pat Cosgrave.

Saeed bin Suroor’s charge arrives here on the back of an all-weather win at Chelmsford when last seen out last September, beating Dubai Warrior by a neck, and the Cape Cross entire had made the frame in all three previous starts over the summer.

He has run well here in the past, winning last season’s Azizi Mina over one mile on this card with a defeat of Race Day, after which he made the frame in subsequent outings which include over this distance in February behind Mountain Hunter.

His last outing saw him win a shade comfortably, and the runner-up has won twice since which includes a Lingfield Listed prize so there could be more to come despite his rise in the weights, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see him competitive once again for all he probably does need to find a shade more improvement.

4:15 – Cape Verdi Sponsored By Creek Views (Group 2) (Fillies & Mares) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m

SURROUNDING (2/1, Coral) knows how to win races, rounding off last term with three wins from her final four outings which include a Group Three at Fairyhouse and a pair of Listed events at Galway and Dundalk.

Mick Halford’s Lilbourne Lad mare was last seen beating Crotchet by three lengths on the polytrack back in November, to take the Listed Cooley Stakes, and she had ran better than the bare result the time before in the Group Two Boomerang Stakes behind Space Traveller where she was beaten a similar margin to that which she scored in her latest success.

She can remain competitive back up in class, and she is the highest rated runner in the field so every chance she can return from her short break with another success and land her biggest win to date.

Surrounding can win the Thursday feature at Meydan for Mick Halford.

4:50 – Mina (Handicap) (Dirt) (3yo+ 90-105) 1m

MIDNIGHT SANDS (2/1, Ladbrokes) is on a roll at present, winning his last three starts, and the Speightstown colt can add again to his tally.

Doug Watson’s charge rounded off last term with a win over six furlongs here last March, beating Shanghai City, and he has returned in excellent heart to strike further wins over seven furlongs which include a defeat of Gaudi latest by a neck.

He appeared to win a shade cosily, always holding on for the win, and he looks to hold solid claims on the pick of his form of registering further success upped in trip which could elicit further improvement.

5:25 – Aliyah (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-110) 1m

ZAINHOLM (13/2, William Hill) was beaten just over one length behind the reopposing Major Partnership with Suedois back in third, and the Street Cry gelding could be worth chancing to go one better on these favourable revised weights.

Mamoud Al Mheiri’s charge was bouncing back from a lesser effort at Abu Dhabi the time before, but he had been in largely good heart since returning from a break which include a win over this trip at Jebel Ali, and he finished off the race best of all latest having been held up off the pace in mid-division before finishing off the race strongly.

He has to back up that performance in what is a stronger contest, but he has made the frame from similar marks in the past and the return to one mile may help him get his head back in front from the same rating.
