Monday 13 January fixture of the day – Through the card tips for Lingfield’s jumps meeting

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for all seven races on the card at Lingfield on Monday.

Monday’s main meeting at Lingfield hinges on a morning inspection for it to get the go-ahead, but should racing get the green light then a decent seven-race card awaits punters although the going at the Surrey track is surely going to be very testing indeed.

The feature race of the day is the 1.05pm contest, the Brian Sewell Will Never Retire Handicap Chase, which is the second race of the card and although only four runners go to post for Monday’s main event it should nonetheless prove an entertaining affair.

BABOIN (7/2, Bet365) has shown a fair amount of ability in Ireland for both Paul Nolan and Joseph O’Brien, but he’s only managed to register one win thus far in his career which came in a Killarney bumper last May.

Now with Tim Vaughn, he returns from almost six months off the track having last been seen finishing third behind Whenurgoodurgood at Killarney on his final outing for O’Brien junior, and he could make a winning introduction for his new handler.

The Creachadoir gelding finished runner-up in a heavy ground bumper earlier in his career, and he was only beaten four lengths on his last outing; that form looks fairly decent with several subsequent winners since coming out of that race.

This doesn’t look a particularly strong affair he finds himself in for his debut for his new yard, and if lack of a recent run doesn’t prove a disadvantage then he ought to go close.

FLAMINGER (4/7, William Hill) sets a clear standard on official ratings, and Gary Moore’s charge should take some beating as he bids to land a hat-trick of successes.

The Racinger gelding showed a useful level of form over hurdles, finishing in the frame on four of his five starts in that discipline; but he has taken his form up a notch since switched to chasing, and having found only Lisp too strong at Plumpton in December he has won both starts since at that venue and Fontwell latterly.

That last run came under a penalty, and he carried a big weight to a near-five lengths’ defeat of Templier, keeping on well, and his revised mark could still leave him with scope for better. He remains open to improvement, and it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see another big run as he bids to land his three-timer.

FLIGHT TO MILAN (7/4, William Hill) remains a maiden, but Evan Williams’ charge can end his losing streak here in what looks a moderate contest.

The Milan gelding has shown he can handle a variety of underfoot conditions over hurdles and fences to date, making the frame in heavy ground over the smaller obstacles at Taunton a couple of seasons ago and latterly finishing only a head behind Go Steady in third at Leicester last month.

His challenge there was halted by a last-fence mistake, but he kept on well for the bronze medal in a blanket finish with eight lengths back to the fourth. But now tried in cheekpieces, the headgear might help him to find some measure of improvement and it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see a big run from him in an ordinary race.

ENZO D’AIRY (4/1, Bet365) didn’t fare too badly on his UK debut for Venetia Williams, eventually finishing fifth behind The Big Breakaway at Chepstow having previously shown useful form in France.

The form of that Chepstow run has worked out quite well, and while the Anzillero gelding wasn’t able to back up that performance next time at Uttoxeter where he finished a poor fourth and beaten some twenty lengths, he could be worth siding with to get off the mark at the third attempt.

On bare form he does have a little a find, and he might benefit in time from a stiffer test than this; but he remains capable of better and can still improve having possibly still needed his last start so he could give a good account in an ordinary contest.

HEAVENLY PROMISE (5/2, Ladbrokes) wasn’t seen to best effect at Hereford latest behind Longhousesignora, finishing a poor sixth in that contest having possibly found the higher grade just too much; but it might be worth forgiving Fergal O’Brien’s charge that effort, and she could bounce back here returning to hurdles.

She had been on a roll earlier in the season, reeling off a three-timer over fences at Sedgefield, Uttoxeter and Ffos Las respectively, and she had finished runner-up in starts either side of her winning sequence before his latest start which includes over the smaller obstacles at Fontwell.

The Presenting mare has done all her winning over fences, but she reverts to hurdles here from the same mark as when posting her last chase success where she had five lengths to spare over Misty Mai, and if able to run to that mark back over timber then every chance she can get back on the winning trail and she looks worth chancing to do so.

The application of cheekpieces for the first time seemed to deliver a jolt of improvement to EPSOM DES MOTTES (5/2, Ladbrokes), with Phil Kirby’s charge running out a ready wide-margin winner over Sporty Yankee, and if the headgear has the same positive effect again then the Maresca Sorrento gelding can follow up.

He had shaped with some ability in prior starts where his form figures perhaps don’t tell the full story; but heavy ground proved little problem for him latest where he had almost 15 lengths to spare over the runner-up who was in turn well clear of the rest.

Of course, he has to back up that run but it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see him go well again if the headgear works again, while he competes here from the same mark as when posting that last-time win and he can double up.

GALTEE MOUNTAIN (11/4, Bet365) has improved for encountering more testing conditions the last twice, and Pat Murphy’s charge can follow up his breakthrough success at Warwick on New Year’s Eve where the Mountain High gelding ran out a six lengths’ winner over Go As You Please.

His form prior to that success had been only moderate, and he hadn’t troubled the judge in any of his previous outings; but he appeared to relish the softer surface latest and with conditions sure to be testing for this latest outing then he could strike again despite this new mark demanding improvement.

A good amateur is booked for this contest, and Jack Savage’s 3lbs claim could go a long way towards helping him add to his tally in the day’s finale where most of his rivals have contesting on the back of lesser last-time outings; and treated as if still in form following his own last-time success, he can strike another win.
