MONDAY HORSE RACING TIPS – BEST BETS AT FONTWELL, STRATFORD, WINCANTON & WOLVERHAMPTON
2:00 Wincanton – Bet At racingtv.com Novices’ Hurdle (GBB Race) Cl4 (4yo+) 2m5½f
It took DANNY KIRWAN a few attempts to finally get off the mark over hurdles, but he did so in good style at Ascot in November where he ran out a near-four lengths’ victor over Time Flies By and Paul Nicholls’ charge is taken to get back to winning ways here.
The Scorpion gelding has been set stiff tasks since that success where he’s run twice in Graded company and the lightly-raced eight-year old could appreciate the return to calmer waters here.
His last outing saw him finish seventh behind Craigneiche at Ascot in the Holloways Hurdle which represents some solid form and he has a fair bit in hand of these rivals on official ratings. Dropping in class he should make his presence felt and no surprise to see him get back on the scoresheet.
2:10 Fontwell – Call Star Sports On 08000 521 321 Handicap Chase Cl5 (5yo+ 0-100) 3m2f
FRIENDS DON’T ASK got off the mark at the fifth attempt over fences when successful at Fakenham back in November and the Champs Elysees gelding is forgiven his subsequent run in the Eider Chase at Newcastle where he was running from almost two stones out of the handicap.
It perhaps isn’t surprising then that he pulled up on that occasion behind Sam’s Adventure having been caught out by the big rise in class; but back in much calmer waters here and only 5lbs higher than when scoring at Fakenham he could well bounce back with the application of first-time cheekpieces a potential source of improvement.
He does have to give away weight to his rivals but this doesn’t look a deep race by any means and he looks to have been given a good opportunity to get back to winning ways.
3:20 Stratford – Bet At racingtv.com Handicap Hurdle Cl3 (4yo+ 0-135) 3m2½f
HOLDBACKTHERIVER has lost his way over the larger obstacles of late and Evan Williams’ charge could be worth chancing back over timber from a reduced mark.
The Presenting gelding won over fences at Chepstow last January and following a couple of promising runs this term he fell back at Chepstow in February and disappointed when last sighted at Southwell when pulled up having jumped poorly.
Now back over hurdles his confidence could be restored by a better effort and he is well-treated from this mark of 113 having finished fourth on his last hurdles start almost two years ago from 9lbs higher; while he won over the smaller ostacles from 110 under this rider back in April 2018.
Isabel Williams takes the reins and her 5lbs claim is good value; he can bounce back here as a result of returning to hurdles and it wouldn’t be a big shock to see him make his presence felt.
3:30 Wincanton – Every Race Live On Racing TV Mares’ Handicap Chase Cl4 (5yo+ 0-120) 3m1f
WHATSDASTORY has to concede weight all round to this field but Dr Richard Newland’s charge could prove up to the task and get off the mark over fences.
The Beneficial mare is an Irish point-winner and she won over hurdles for this yard at Southwell back in December 2019 in a light campaign. This season has seen her turn out four times and she’s made the frame in three completed starts including finishing runner-up the last twice.
The latest of those came when beaten eight lengths by Quick Wave although she in turn was clear of the rest and she can get competitive here off the same mark.
With the drying ground no issue despite having to give away upwards of 5lbs although this is a slight drop in class and she can go close.
3:40 Fontwell – Starsports.Bet £20K Owners Club Guarantee Handicap Chase Cl4 (5yo+ 0-115) 2m2f
CELTIC JOY has been out of sorts this term but Emma Lavelle’s charge is now below his last winning mark and might have been rejuvenated by having had a wind operation since his last start at Huntingdon back in November last year.
The Kayf Tara gelding finished fourth on that occasion some thirty lengths behind Awake At Midnight but the horses who finished either side of him have both won since and he could bounce back following his break with cheekpieces now applied.
This represents a drop in class from the races he’s used to contesting and he can make his presence felt if the first-time headgear and wind operation spark a revival of fortunes.
3:50 Stratford – Visit racingtv.com Handicap Chase Cl3 (5yo+ 0-135) 2m6½f
MIDNIGHTREFERENDUM was a winner on her chase debut at Fontwell back in November and although she fell next time she’s been running well in defeat since with a trio of efforts in the frame at Listed level including being beaten just under two lengths behind Momella at Exeter latest.
She was only run down late by the winner on that occasion, giving way in the dying strides and eventually finishing third although she was seven lengths clear of the remainder. That race has thrown up a subsequent winner and the fourth horse home has bagged successive silver medals since.
Switching now to the handicap ranks she could be well-treated off 133 and the slight drop in trip should show her in better light than the three miles she contested over last time. Alan King’s charge should also be suited by the better ground on this occasion and she ought to go well in this contest.
5:20 Wolverhampton – Play 4 To Win At Betway Handicap Cl5 (4yo+ 0-75) 1m4f
DREAM WITH ME failed to get his head in front last term but he did turn in several promising efforts including when last seen at Windsor where only one proved too strong for the Frankel colt who was beaten just over one length behind Lady Isabel.
Mark Johnston’s charge wore blinkers on that occasion but the headgear is left off for this return to action from more than five months off although given connections lack of a recent run usually isn’t a disadvantage.
He returns to the all-weather for this outing but he has past experience of tapeta and there could be further improvement to come from him this term. Racing off the same mark as when last seen he could make his presence felt here under Ben Curtis.
5:50 Wolverhampton – Betway Handicap Cl5 (4yo+ 0-75) 1m1½f
FIEROSPEED was only beaten a head by reopposing Starfighter over this course and distance 16 days ago but Richard Hannon’s charge can gain some revenge here.
The Zoffany colt was conceding race-fitness to his rival when making a return to action from six months off the track and he was only run down in the last few strides by the eventual winner who was giving the selection 2lbs on that occasion.
But likely to be sharper now with that outing under his belt and 1lb better off for the narrow margin of defeat he could overturn that form this time around. With just four career starts he’s much more unexposed than his rival and with plenty of scope for improvement he can come out on top here.
