Racing tips for Sunday’s meetings on the flat and over the sticks

Sunday’s fixture list is fairly low-key with Glorious Goodwood on the horizon; the day’s meetings are on the flat and over the jumps and we’ve picked out our racing tips for Sunday’s meetings.

With Glorious Goodwood just around the corner the Sunday programme of horse racing is fairly low-key with just three meetings going to post on the flat and over the sticks.

The day’s flat racing action will unfold at Pontefract where there is Listed action while the first meeting of the new Sunday Series takes place at Musselburgh where the full meeting will unfold on ITV Racing.

Completing Sunday’s trio of fixtures is Uttoxeter which is racing over the jumps and we’ve looked over all three fixtures taking place to pick out our racing tips for Sunday and best bets for the day.

2:50 Uttoxeter – Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl2 (4yo+) 3m2f

MONTANNA has been in good form since switching back to chasing this term, winning twice at Ffos Las and Peter Bowen’s charge ran at least as well without managing to bring up the hat-trick when finishing third at Worcester last month behind Fidux.

That was his third run in little over a month and there’s a chance he was just feeling those exertions given he had held every chance over two out but was unable to maintain his effort to the line. He’s since had a full month off however and while this is a slightly stronger grade he can make his presence felt again from 1lb lower.

The runner-up and fifth horses home have both won since – the latter also competes here – and he remains with some scope to improve over fences given he was rated higher over hurdles so a big performance wouldn’t come as a surprise.

3:35 Pontefract – Pontefract And District Golf Club Ltd Handicap Cl4 (3yo+ 0-85) 1m2f

WHERE’S JEFF has been on good terms with himself this campaign, winning twice and largely running well in defeat including when denied only by a short-head at Hamilton ten days ago.

Mick Easterby’s charge was arguably unlucky as he met with plenty of running and despite getting to the fromt in the last furlong he was just run down late to lose out on the nod.

Regal Mirage reopposes here having finished third and could finish closer with a 3lbs pull at the weights; but the Easterby runner can confirm the places if granted a little more luck in running and the consistent Haafhd gelding ought to be competitive again with the winner of that last race since boosting the form at Newcastle.

The extra distance here will be of no consequence and every chance he can post another solid performance in this contest.

4:10 Pontefract – Sky Bet Go-Racing-In-Yorkshire Summer Festival Pomfret Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m

Regal Reality ought to take plenty of beating here but a chance is taken on BRUNCH to bounce back from his Royal Hunt Cup seventh and get back on the scoresheet.

A three-time winner last term he had been in decent form this campaign, twice finishing runner-up in valuable handicaps at Doncaster and York prior to tackling his Royal Ascot assignment where he ran better than the bare result behind Real World.

That form has been boosted and while he has a bit more on his plate back in Listed company he could give the Stoute runner something to think about at a backable price with William Buick up for the first time and he remains open to improvement.

4:20 Musselburgh – Sky Bet Sunday Series Apprentice Training Series Handicap (Part of the Racing Excellence Initiative) Cl4 (3yo+ 0-85) 1m1f

NOBLE CRUSADE has had just five career starts but the Noble Mission colt has won two of those five starts and Keith Dalgleish’s charge can strike again here.

Both wins have come at Carlisle, latterly finishing off strongly to deny Arthur’s Realm earlier this month and the fourth horse home in that race did little harm to the form when finishing runner-up next time.

He’s 3lbs higher in the weights here but still unexposed and there could be more to come from him so every chance he can go in again with more improvement anticipated.

5:00 Uttoxeter – National Racehorse Week 12th-19th September Handicap Chase Cl4 (4yo+ 0-120) 2m5f

DEMON D’ANOU had hinted on more than one occasion that a return to the winners’ enclosure wasn’t far away and the Martaline gelding confirmed his well-being when getting back on the scoresheet at Stratford last Sunday where he ran out an easy winner.

Jonjo O’Neill’s charge won by eight lengths that day, travelling well and leading over the final fence before asserting and a repeat of that effort here can see him follow up under a 7lbs penalty.

Perhaps the presence of Jonjo O’Neill Jnr was a positive factor in the saddle last time and the pair retain the partnership here so they could well repeat the dose despite this arguably being a better race.

6:15 Musselburgh – Sky Bet Sunday Series Handicap Cl4 (3yo+ 0-85) 7f

DANZAN hasn’t won for a while but this is his easiest assignment for some time and it might be worth siding with the Lawman gelding to end his losing streak here.

Tim Easterby’s charge has been running fairly consistently in Class Two contests this term, finishing a close runner-up to Mr Lupton at York in May and recent efforts at Pontefract and back at York have seen him finish fourth behind Corinthia Knight and Capote’s Dream respectively in much stronger races than this.

The form of his last start in particular looks solid and he’s been eased 1lb in the weights from that run as he drops into a Class 4 race so there’d be no surprise in seeing him turn in a big performance in this easier grade.
