2:20 Newton Abbot – Sky Sports Racing On Sky 415 Mares’ Maiden Hurdle (GBB Race) Cl4 (4yo+) 2m5½f

THAT’S THE TRUTH has shown enough in her hurdles starts to date that he has the ability to win races and the Darsi mare can get off the mark here.

Twice placed in points for Sean Doyle in Ireland she’s now with Jonjo O’Neill for whom she’s shown steady progress to make the frame in three of her four outings, most recently not beaten far behind Tipalong Tiger over three miles at Doncaster.

That form doesn’t look too shabby as the winner has since run well against a very progressive sort and she could open her account now back in a maiden where Kevin Brogan can claim a handy 5lbs.

This doesn’t look the strongest of races and she remains open to improvement so is taken to go close where she can register a first career win.

Racing tips for Tuesday's meetings. Jonjo O'Neill can saddle a winner on the card at Newton Abbot.

2:45 Newmarket – Pat Smullen Memorial Handicap Cl2 (4yo+ 0-100) 1m

HORTZADAR continued to run to a high level last term, making the frame on a number of occasions and winning twice with victories at Ripon and Goodwood in the late summer.

David O’Meara’s charge was possibly feeling the effects of a busy season when disappointing in a pair of runs eight days apart at York and Ascot respectively; but he turned in a much better effort back from a break in the Lincoln Handicap last month, finishing third to Haqeeqy.

He’s unchanged in the ratings for that effort but he’ll strip fitter for that return to action and he can go well again under his good claiming rider who is value for his 5lbs allowance and who gets on well with the Sepoy gelding.

This is competitive but less so than his Doncaster return and he ought to go close here.

3:20 Newmarket – bet365 Feilden Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (3yo) 1m1f

SECRET PROTECTOR arrives here on a hat-trick of wins having struck last term at the second attempt at Kempton before stepping up to this trip and running out a ready winner at Meydan in February where he was a five lengths’ winner over Areen.

Charlie Appleby’s charge turns out fit as a result of that outing and he is open to further improvement on the back of the run so could well take a forward step here where he can prove tough to beat despite taking on some similarly progressive rivals.

It is a slight worry that trainer Charlie Appleby is 0-6 in the past fortnight, but the War Front colt could give the top yard a shot in the arm ahead of a big week and he can go well here where it would be no surprise to see him strike again.

3:45 Southwell – Join Southwell Golf Club Handicap Hurdle (Div I) Cl4 (4yo+ 0-110) 3m½f

MR KATANGA has shown promise in his hurdles starts to date where he’s most recently finished a close runner-up at Taunton over this trip behind Tactical Manoeuvre, beaten just over one length.

Olly Murphy’s charge was bouncing back from a lesser effort at Fontwell in February where she failed to handle the heavy conditions; but he ran a much better race back on a sounder surface and the Flemensfirth gelding can build on that here.

That was just his second handicap start and he appeared to relish the stiffer test of stamina; he’ll have to step up again however having been raised 2lbs in the weights while Gavin Sheehan takes over from a 7lbs claimer so he will need more at the weights to land this prize. However he’s open to improvement and may well progress enough to go close in an open contest.

Racing tips for Tuesday's meetings. Title-chasing jockey Brian Hughes can get amongst the winners at Southwell.

4:55 Southwell – Advertiser Ladies Day Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Cl5 (4yo+ 0-105) 2m4½f

OTTONIAN won twice on the level for Charlie Appleby and since being switched to hurdles by Donald McCain the Dubawi gelding has acquitted himself well, making the frame twice towards the end of last year and following wind surgery returned to action to collect successive bronze medals in jumpers’ bumpers at Newcastle.

Given a break following his two lengths’ third to Manjaam in February he got off the mark over hurdles last month with a defeat of Balranald at Musselburgh, scoring by just over one length and that form has been boosted since with the third and fifth both going to to register wins since.

Having appeared to win a shade readily last time out a subsequent 2lbs rise in the weights could prove lenient and the application of cheekpieces for the first time could eke out more improvement so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him going close again here.

6:00 Newcastle – QuinnBetCasino Handicap Cl4 (4yo+ 0-80) 1m

KENTUCKYCONNECTION has won two of his last three starts, both over course and distance and the Include gelding can follow up his latest win here last month where he narrowly got the better of Broctune Red.

Bryan Smart’s charge battled back well once headed on that occasion and he gave the impression there was still more in the locker. That form doesn’t look too bad with the runner-up and fourth both making the frame again since and a 4lbs rise doesn’t look overly harsh.

Broctune Red reopposes again here but the selection was giving Gillian Boanas’ charge 13lbs and including the latter rider’s claim he’s only 1lb better in this latest rematch. That rival may be in the handicapper’s grip but is consistent and goes well here so will be dangerous.

However the selection also goes well at this track and he’s still well-treated on his old form so ought to go well once more in this contest where he can go close.
