SATURDAY DOWN ROYAL TIPS – BEST BETS OVER THE STICKS IN IRELAND
1:05 Down Royal – Value Cabs 3yo Hurdle (3yo) 2m1f
SEA SESSIONS found only one too good when making a promise-filled debut at Punchestown earlier in the month and Ross O’sullivan’s charge can improve for that experience to go one better here.
A winner on the flat over the summer the Territories filly was beaten only a half-length by Bell EX One, running on well behind her more experienced rival and she looks sure to progress with that behind her.
She has form on testing ground on the flat which ought to stand her in good stead faced with these conditions and she gets plenty of weight from this field of rivals so she ought to give another good account and there’d be no surprise in seeing her get off the mark now at the second attempt.
2:15 Down Royal – Dr Emma Clinics Handicap Hurdle (Grade B) (4yo+ 0-150) 2m1f
LIGHT BRIGADE arrives here fit from the flat and the Leading Light gelding can carry off where he left off when last seen over obstacles with a return to winning ways.
Charles Byrne’s charge proved progressive in the early part of the year, winning twice with victories at Fairyhouse and Naas before taking another step forward despite meeting with defeat back at Punchestown in April, finding only Cousin Harry too strong by a neck and only run down close home.
He’s up another 6lbs for that but his rider can claim back 5lbs and he should be capable of making his presence felt here with a run under his belt to sharpen him up.
2:50 Down Royal – Ladbrokes Champion Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+) 3m
Cheltenham Gold Cup hero MINELLA INDO ought to be hard to beat here and Henry De Bromhead’s charge can make a winning reappearance.
The Beat Hollow gelding won first time up twelve months ago when scoring easily at Wexford and he followed up that victory by taking a Grade Two at Navan in November before falling in the Savills Chase and disappointing in the Irish Gold Cup prior to bouncing back with a defeat of more fancied stablemate A Plus Tard in the Cheltenham Festival feature.
A clear form pick with 8lbs in hand on official ratings he looks hard to oppose making his return from more than seven months off and if he were to pick up where he left off last term then he should prove too good for these rivals.
4:00 Down Royal – Barclay Communications Handicap Chase (5yo+) 3m
SHANROE AL C won twice last term, one each over hurdles and fences and Karl Thornton’s charge arrives here on the back of a win at Perth in August where he did well to overcome being outpaced at a crucial stage of the race, rallying well to get up close home.
The Arcadio gelding had finished runner-up over the same course and distance prior to that victory where he made a mistake and found himself outpaced mid-race. But he stuck on well to the task at hand and ran on well after the last to land a narrow neck victory over Spider’s Bite and he can compete here from the same mark.
That Perth form hasn’t worked out and this looks a tougher assignment, but he’s been freshened up by a break and should have little problems with the conditions so he could be capable of another big performance here.
