Goodwood and Thirsk also race on the level on Saturday afternoon where all three fixtures contribute to the day’s ITV Racing coverage. Meanwhile in the evening there is further flat racing on the agenda at Doncaster.
The summer jumps season also gets underway on Saturday with fixtures over the sticks at Uttoxeter in the afternoon and Hexham in the evening. We’ve looked over all six of the day’s racecards to pick out our Saturday racing best bets and tips.
SATURDAY RACING BEST BETS – TIPS FOR THE DAY’S FIXTURES ACROSS THE UK
2:05 Goodwood – MansionBet Best Odds Guaranteed Conqueror Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m
AMNIARIX has proven progressive on the all-weather over the winter months, registering a hat-trick of victories at Wolverhampton twice and Kempton which includes defeats of Toronado Queen and Shimmering Dawn.
Ed Walker’s charge returned from three months off the track to post a very good third in Listed company back at Kempton in April when beaten three lengths into third by Lavender’s Blue and entitled to progress further the Speightstown filly can remain competitive.
She perhaps wasn’t suited by the steady pace on that occasion as she appeared to get outpaced before running on again; she might benefit from more of a gallop which she’s likely to get here and back on turf she can progress again and ought to go close with the benefit of that recent run under her belt.
2:40 Thirsk – Cliff Stud Thirsk Hunt Cup Handicap Cl2 (4yo+ 0-105) 1m
Lightly-raced ACQUITTED might be worth siding with to go one better than on his reappearance where he found only a race-fit rival too strong in the Doncaster Spring Mile.
Hugo Palmer’s charge had looked set for good things as a juvenile, winning two of three starts and making a decent reappearance behind Palace Pier at Newcastle last June.
Things didn’t go to plan thereafter and he failed to beat a rival in two subsequent starts at Ascot and Sandown; but he bounced back in no uncertain terms on his latest reappearance, only headed close home by the winner who battled back gamely.
That winner has gone in again since to boost the form, while the third and fifth horses home have both ran well in defeat; there’s also been a couple of subsequent winners from those who finished further back and a 1lb rise in the weights looks very workable as a consequence.
He has to back up that performance but that may well occur this campaign and he can make his presence felt.
3:35 Uttoxeter – Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Staffordshire Plate Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl2 (5yo+) 3m
OFALLTHEGINJOINTS showed some smart form over hurdles last term and the Stowaway gelding looked set for a good campaign chasing when winning at the second attempt over fences at Exeter back in November.
Things haven’t gone to plan for Colin Tizzard’s charge however although he has contested some strong races including the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and he was last seen running quite well in a Grade Three handicap contest at Aintree in April where he finished fifth to Happygolucky.
This ease in class might show him in a better light and the handicapper has dropped him another 1lb in the weights so he’s beginning to become well-treated and if he can build on that Aintree run then he could go close here if brushing up on his jumping.
3:40 Newmarket – Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) Cl1 (3yo) 1m
THUNDER MOON and Wembley renew rivalry in this contest with the score one apiece between Joseph and Aidan O’Brien’s respective runners and it could be the young master’s charge which comes out on top here.
The Zoffany colt had beaten Wembley at the Curragh in September, taking the National Stakes readily despite twice being badly hampered in a field that also included St Mark’s Basilica, Master Of The Seas and Lucky Vega.
That was his second win in succession and he ran well in defeat behind St Mark’s Basilica and Wembley when third in the Dewhurst here in October, possibly not coping as well with the softer ground as the front two but still only beaten around two lengths.
A return to better ground and a step up in trip could well show him in a better light on his reappearance and he remains with plenty of scope for improvement so it wouldn’t come as a huge shock to see him in the thick of things here.
4:25 Thirsk – Stay At Frankel Cottage Cliff Stud Handicap Cl4 (3yo+ 0-85) 5f
BALLINTOY HARBOUR is still unexposed but has already won two of her three starts and the Vadamos filly can land the hat-trick here.
A Pontefract winner last August she returned from a break to run out a ready winner over Diamonds Dancing at Newcastle latest and she’ll come on for that effort. She may find it a bit more difficult however dominating this field of more experienced sprinters as she heads into the handicap ranks although her mark of 82 may prove workable.
Her rivals are more exposed while Paul Midgley’s charge is open to further improvement and the yard is adept at improving sprinters so she looks to hold solid claims here with the potential for better still to come.
5:20 Hexham – Sky Sports Racing Selling Hurdle Cl4 (4yo+) 2m
PARICOLOR is a decent sort at this level and the Orpen gelding is a rare runner at this venue for David Pipe; he can make the journey worthwhile with another success.
Still only a five-year old he’s made hay in selling company this term where he’s won five times and beat a few of these in the process of doing so. He proved better ground was no issue when beating Let’s Sway at Wetherby last month and he was value for more than the winning distance having make a mistake at the last.
David Pipe has a decent record with its’ runners here, operating at a 32% strike-rate and he ought to be a tough nut to crack again here with Fergus Gillard taking 5lbs off.
6:35 Doncaster – Free Tips Daily On attheraces.com Handicap Cl2 (3yo+ 0-105) 6f
LEXINGTON DASH saw his progress stall to a degree last term having struck a brace of wins at Newmarket last June although to be fair to the Siyouni colt he did come up against some smart rivals and take in some very strong contests including the Stewards Cup and Ayr Gold Cup.
Richard Hannon’s charge has had a couple of runs this term, denied only by a short head at this venue on his return and then ran a very good fourth on the all-weather at Kempton last month where he was beaten just over one length into fourth behind Desert Safari.
He remains fairly-weighted on last season’s form despite being raised 2lbs and it transpired post-race last time that he’d been struck into so that effort could be marked up. Assuming all is well he ought to be capable of making his presence felt here and he can get back on track with a return to winning ways.
