Sceptre Stakes – Our 1-2-3 Prediction For Wednesday’s Feature At Doncaster

The feature race on the opening day of Doncaster’s St Leger Festival is the Group 3 Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes (3:35). We’ve studied all eleven runners chances to give our 1-2-3 prediction for the feature.

It’s the ideal opportunity to take advantage of 888Sport’s fantastic new customer offer:

1st – Bounce The Blues (15/2)

Trainer Andrew Balding has a superb recent record in the race – he won it in 2018 with Dancing Star, and again in 2020 with Foxtrot Lady. He clearly knows what level the horses need to be at to win here, and he looks to have an excellent chance with BOUNCE THE BLUES this year.

She finished 7th in the Oak Tree Stakes at her last attempt at 7f, but finished ahead of a couple of these rivals still, including Heredia. She was giving that rival 7lb that day, and only has to give her 4lb here.

This will be her second attempt at winning the race, having finished third as a 3YO in 2020. The form of that race has worked out nicely:

  • Althiqa (2nd) –  Multiple Grade 1 winner in the USA.
  • Onassis (4th) – Won next time out and a close second in Group 2 since.
  • Cloak Of Spirits (5th) – Won next time out and came third in a Group 1 after.
  • Jouska (8th) – Won next time out.

Add to that she will have William Buick on board, which is a major boost with the way he’s been riding all year. He’s nailed on to be Champion Jockey this year and has already ridden five winners in September from just 12 rides.

She may not have won since August 2020, but she’s gone extremely close on multiple occasions and with the trainer’s superb record in the race, we’re backing Bounce The Blues to come out on top in Wednesday’s feature.

2nd – Novemba (4/1)

German trainer Peter Schiergen is no stranger to success when sending his horses over to England.

The step back in trip to 7f could be just what German raider NOVEMBA needs, having failed to see out the mile trip in her three outings this year.

Two of those were in Group 2 races, and she has been far from disgraced in any of his races this year. Only Jumbly and Oscula finished ahead of her in the Valiant Stakes at Ascot in July, and she was giving both of those horses 8lb that day. A repeat of that level of performance here will see her go close.

Her trainer Peter

Schiergen had a winner at Glorious Goodwood with Rocchigiani so knows what it takes to have a winner on these shores. She’s clearly a classy filly, but will the step back in trip see her back in the winners enclosure? With her winless run stretching back over 15 months, we’re not convinced, but we do think she’ll go close!

3rd – Adaay In Asia (9/2)

Coming here on the back of a four-timer, ADAAY IN ASIA is in the form of her life. This is a marked step up in class however, and that may find her out.

Having rattled in a hat-trick over 6f, she stepped up to 7f for the first time in her career last time out, and took it in her stride as she won cosily, despite meeting some trouble in running and being short of room when making her effort.

This will be her first try in group company, and although she’s clearly in red-hot form, there are some tried and trusted group level horses in here that might just prove too good for her. Having said that, she deserves a crack in this company and with the 3YO weight allowance, we’re backing her to finish in the places.

1st – Bounce The Blues

2nd – Novemba

3rd – Adaay In Asia
