Sunday Fairyhouse and Cork tips – Irish racing best bets 5 July
The return of Enable at Sandown will garner plenty of attention on Sunday, but there is plenty of racing action elsewhere and two meetings go to post in Ireland and we’ve got Fairyhouse and Cork tips for the day’s racing.
It is Coral Eclipse Day at Sandown on Sunday, as well as being French Oaks day in France at Chantilly; while in Ireland it is Munster Oaks day at Cork and the Group Three contest is one of two on a cracking racecard which also features the Marble Hill Stakes and the Sweet Mimosa Stakes as well as some competitive handicap action.
At Fairyhouse meanwhile, there is further Group Three action taking place with the Ballycorus Stakes spearheading some quality action at the premier Meath track where a seven-race card awaits punters.
It promises to be another great day of Irish horse racing action, and having found more winners this week we’re looking to add to our tally with our Sunday Fairyhouse and Cork tips for the day’s racing action.
SUNDAY FAIRYHOUSE AND CORK TIPS 5 JULY
3:40 Cork – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Sweet Mimosa Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies & Mares) (3yo+) 6f
Lady Penelope had a few of these behind her when winning the Polonia Stakes recently; but little went right for PEACE CHARTER in a Group Three contest latest and Ger Lyons’ charge is taken to quickly bounce back.
A debut winner at Naas, the War Front filly was subsequently highly-tried in Pattern company, twice filling the frame including posting a good third to Albigna in the Group Two Airlie Stud Stakes at the Curragh last July.
She could only finish fifth on her recent reappearance, but she got herself into all sorts of bother, slowly away and then found herself boxed in around two furlongs out. It was all too late by the time Colin Keane was able to extricate herself from trouble and she was flying at the death where she was only around three lengths adrift of the winner.
The runner-up from that race has won a Group Three contest since and she’ll be sharper for her return; while a bit more luck in running this time can see her firmly in the mix and she can do much better here.
3:55 Fairyhouse – Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-up July 24th Handicap (3yo 50-80) 1m2f
A few of these arrive on the back of lesser efforts last time out; not so SILVERTOWN who ran out a narrow winner at Tipperary last month and the Make Believe gelding might have been found a decent opportunity for him to follow up.
Andrew Oliver’s charge was making just his fourth career start and first in a handicap when getting the better of Waterville Lady, scoring by three-parts of a length and he ought to be suited by this extra furlong so may yet improve further.
The handicapper has hit him with a 9lbs rise in the weights following that win, but Shane Crosse can remove 3lbs of that burden and this isn’t a strong race he finds himself in as he bids to double up on his tally. There’s a suspicion he won a shade comfortably last time and open to further progress taking on some out-of-sorts rivals then he could prove a tough nut to crack here.
5:15 Cork – Munster Oaks Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) (3yo+) 1m4f
SEARCH FOR A SONG proved a progressive sort last term, winning three of her five starts which included victory in the Irish St Leger where she beat Kew Gardens by two lengths.
Dermot Weld’s charge will be sharper for her recent return over a trip short of her best in the Mooresbridge stakes where she finished sixth having been outpaced after going to the front three furlongs from home and she was unable to match the speed of her rivals.
She’ll be much happier over this longer trip having won last season’s Galtres Stakes at York over this distance prior to stepping up for the Irish St Leger and the application of a first-time hood could yield another jolt of improvement.
Having impressed in that Irish Classic last term, she sets the standard on that form and sure to strip fitter for her reappearance back at a more suitable distance then she can do better here to get back on the scoresheet in this Group Three contest.
5:30 Fairyhouse – Rybo Ballycorus Stakes (Group 3) (3yo+) 7f
Last-time winner Speak In Colours makes his fourth start in as many weeks but could prove vulnerable back at this longer trip and conceding weight; it could be worth chancing then on the returning SURROUNDING who has wintered in Dubai and makes her seasonal debut following four months off.
The Lilbourne Lad mare is 2-2 over this course and distance, winning the Brownstown Stakes here last July and then adding a pair of Listed victories either side of a creditable run in fifth behind Space Traveller in the Boomerang Stakes.
Four runs under the Emirates sun were all solid efforts, last seen finishing ten lengths’ sixth to Barney Roy in the Jebel Hatta at Meydan. But back from a break she has shown she can go well fresh before and her record here entitles her to plenty of respect so no surprise if she were to post a big run on her reappearance although she might not want too much give in the ground.
