Cheltenham tips – best bets for the Supreme Novices Hurdle

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tips

Our expert Daryl Carter (@darylcarter7) gives the latest of his Cheltenham tips in the Supreme Novices Hurdle, which takes place on Cheltenham Festival Day one, Tuesday, March 10.

The curtain raiser with the Cheltenham roar, the buzz and the excitement of four season-defining days about to start. The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is as open this year as it was last, with no Willie Mullins hotpot leading the charge.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tips – New market leader

SHISHKIN is clear favourite after extending his winning streak to three at Huntingdon and he has shown a powerful finishing kick and  raw talent. He clearly has plenty of staying power and speed and rates an exciting recruit.

His penultimate win at Newbury was not great time-wise when compared to the other two races on the card over the same trip, but it was his finishing effort that caught the eye. From the final hurdle to the finish line, he was two seconds quicker than the 0-120 handicap on the same day.

However, we must remember that the horse that won that race, Le Lingerien, finished on the bridle and his sectionals from three out to the last were much faster. Shishkin was keen throughout the race and clearly possesses huge ability to win in the manner he did. He rates an exciting prospect but is an extremely short price for a race of this nature.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tips – Former favourite usurped

ENVOI ALLEN was the ante-post market leader and he would take all the beating if lining up here. His powerful closing sectionals at the end of two miles suggests this is the right way to go, but connections look set on heading to the Ballymore Novice Hurdle, so I won’t waste any more of your time with him.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tips – Elliott’s number one

ABACADABRAS will likely lead the line for Gordon Elliott  in the absence of Envoi Allen and it’s hard to argue with the strength of his form. He divides opinion but his run in the Royal Bond when second to Envoi Allen is hard to ignore and that rates the leading piece of form in the Supreme Novices Hurdle to date.

He is now a Grade 1 winner, albeit in not the strongest of races, but he won the Future Champions Novice Hurdle with the minimum of fuss. There are lots to like about him but one concern would be the way he races as he is not guaranteed to find a lot off the bridle and there are doubts over his attitude at present, but he deserves his place at the front of the market.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tips – Huge each-way chance

CHANTRY HOUSE is a horse I’m extremely fond of. He’s a winner of his only start over hurdles at Cheltenham, where he looked in need of the run but readily came clear of his rivals and the runner-up is now rated 140. The race has worked out well, with the second and fourth winning next time.

His bumper run at Warwick last season also worked out well, with decent horse Edwardstone comfortably held back in second. That horse has since beaten Fiddlerontheroof, a subsequent Grade 1 winner. Chantry House has plenty of scope for improvement and must rate a strong candidate for the race.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tips – Potential improver

CAPTAIN GUINNESS was a huge eye-catcher on his second start over hurdles when far too keen for most of the race before battling on gamely to finish within a length of Andy Dufresne who had lost his unbeaten record the time before.

Captain Guinness looks to have bags of talent and he could prove a useful prospect if he learns to channel his energy more efficiently. It’s hard to gauge the quality of his form and I wouldn’t be overly keen on the horse at this stage as I’d like to see another performance before holding him in high rank

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tips – Big-race verdict

Outside the market principals, it’s hard to see anything making a statement this late in the day and the winner is likely come from those mentioned above.

I am quietly confident at this stage that CHANTRY HOUSE is a useful prospect. I normally like to back a Grade 1 winner that has beaten a subsequent Grade 1 winner in this race but I have no doubt that the ability is in the locker of Chantry House and the 12/1 odds are extremely attractive.
