THURSDAY HORSE RACING TIPS – BEST BETS AT UTTOXETER, WETHERBY, FFOS LAS & CHELMSFORD
2:15 Wetherby – Sixt Car Hire Handicap Chase Cl4 (5yo+ 0-110) 1m7f
The quicker ground is a slight worry for SNOUGAR but assuming the Arakan gelding handles the conditions then Donald McCain’s charge could go well.
The eight-year old scored off a higher mark than this over course and distance last March on his first start following wind surgery and while he hasn’t managed to win again he has run some good races in defeat including behind the useful Relkadam in February.
That winner has run well since while the third scored when next seen at Leicester so the form looks solid enough and racing off an unchanged mark for this latest outing he could go close if the faster ground doesn’t catch him out.
2:25 Ffos Las – Nick Milner Silviculture Ltd Novices’ Hurdle (Novices’ Championship Hurdle Series Qual’) (GBB Race) Cl4 (4yo+) 2m
GIPSY DU CHOISEL won a French hurdle last May, beating High Ball prior to switching to Nicky Henderson and the Great Pretender gelding ran well for a long way on his Seven Barrows debut behind Metier at Ascot where he finished third to that classy Grade One winner.
He raced too keenly next time at Market Rasen where he was disappointing behind Ajero although that form has been significantly boosted since. The race-winner scored next time out while the runner-up filled the same spot behind Langer Dan in the Imperial Cup; that one finished fourth in the race before his Sandown win and also found only one too good at the Cheltenham Festival a couple of weeks ago.
He’s certainly worth another chance on the back of that run given how the race has worked out and back in a novices’ contest he could get off the mark for his top yard now.
2:40 Uttoxeter – Sky Sports Racing HD Virgin 535 Handicap Hurdle Cl3 (4yo+ 0-130) 2m4f
MEGA YEATS still possibly needed the run at Kelso when last seen finishing third behind Flash Collonges last month and Mark Walford’s charge could improve on that effort to get back on the scoresheet easing slightly in class.
The Yeats mare was a useful sort for Ruth Jefferson previously, winning three times in bumpers and over hurdles around this trip during the 2018/19 season although she didn’t build on the promise she had shown when disappointing in two runs the following campaign.
Back from a lengthy absence and wind surgery she found only one too good in a jumpers’ bumper prior to that latest hurdles return and the form has been franked since by the runner-up winning next time.
This is an open and competitive heat but she’s been dropped another 1lb in the ratings and steps down into a Class 3 contest; it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her turning in a big effort on the back of that Kelso run and she can get back on the scoresheet.
3:20 Wetherby – Watch Irish Racing On Racing TV Handicap Hurdle Cl4 (4yo+ 0-120) 2m5½f
A return to better ground for his past couple of runs has seen ROXBORO ROAD come back to form with back-to-back wins at Musselburgh and here latest and the Oscar gelding can land a hat-trick of victories.
Ben Haslam’s charge ran out a ready winner latest over Maid O’malley, scoring by almost seven lengths and he could be on a very dangerous back over hurdles which he can exploit if continuing his good spell of form.
He was a winner in Ireland from higher than this rating while he’s due to go up 12lbs in future runs and he could prove hard to beat if carrying on in the same sort of form.
3:40 Uttoxeter – Watch Free Race Replays On attheraces.com Handicap Chase Cl4 (5yo+ 0-120) 3m
As a general rule BOUGHTBEFORELUNCH usually finds a couple too good but Peter Webber’s charge is largely consistent despite a poor win record and the Dubai Destination gelding has made the frame in his last three starts.
Runner-up when last seen at Sandown in December where he was beaten six lengths by Call Me Vic he makes his return from almost four months off and there’s a slight worry he might need this; but his consistency can’t be knocked and he can run here from the same mark as when last seen.
Factor in Jack Savage’s 5lbs claim and he should give another good account for all he may have to settle for minor honours again. This doesn’t look the strongest of races however and recent winning form is thin on the ground; this also represents an ease in class and he should make his presence felt again.
4:37 Wetherby – Potters Canter Carpet West Wales National Handicap Chase Cl3 (5yo+ 0-135) 3m4f
The step up in trip could unlock further improvement in ECLAIR MAG who has run well on both starts for this yard following his switch from France.
Richard Bandey’s charge made a winning debut for his new yard at Market Rasen when readily scoring by five lengths over Mac Tottie in January and the Network gelding lost little caste in defeat latest when chasing home the useful Chapel Stile at Carlisle in February where he was beaten around four lengths.
He’s only 1lb higher here and the drying ground shouldn’t pose too much of an issue; he could go well over this longer distance and he’s unexposed still after just two runs in the UK so may well have more to offer and he could be worth chancing to step up.
5:20 Chelmsford – Support The Injured Jockeys Fund Handicap Cl5 (4yo+ 0-75) 1m
DUTUGAMUNU has been in good form this campaign winning twice and making the frame twice from five starts and Richard Spencer’s charge can get back to winning ways here.
The Ivawood gelding won for this column two starts ago when beating Princesse Animale over this trip at Lingfield and he wasn’t beaten far behind Glasvegas on his next outing back there last month, beaten just one length and the winner has gone in again since.
Placed at this venue previously he can compete from the same mark in this contest where Angus Villiers’ 5lbs claim is noteworthy and he could notch up a third career success in this race if continuing in similar vein.
5:50 Chelmsford – Woodford Reserve Cardinal Conditions Stakes (The Road To The Kentucky Derby) (Plus 10 Race) Cl2 (3yo) 1m
At big odds it might be worth chancing Mark Johnston’s QAADER to outrun his price and the Night Of Thunder colt brings plenty of solid form to the table from his juvenile campaign.
A debut winner at Newbury in June he contested in Group company for the remainder of the campaign, only beaten one length by Nando Parrado in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and third in the Somerville Tattersalls Stakes both very notable efforts.
He was probably unsuited by the soft ground when disappointing in the Group Three Autumn Stakes on his final start where he did too much in front and faded away to finish last of the eleven runners. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him do better however on a quicker surface and if handling polytrack on his seasonal debut then he could post a bit effort here.
This is a solid race but he could make his presence felt if progressing from two to three and despite likely double-digit odds he can show up well under Ben Curtis.
