When I was looking at this race before the odds were released, I was sure THE BAY BIRCH (NAP) would open at odds-on. Annie Angel’s progression has come out of nowhere and this is a huge step up in grade. Atalanta Ablaze has done all of her best work on good ground and carries a four-pound penalty for a Listed victory of her own last season. Angel Of Harlem needs to find a lot more and Heavenly Promise shouldn’t pose much of a threat.

So, to see Matt Sheppards market leader sitting on 11/10 was quite alarming and this is a price you simply cannot afford to sleep on.

The Bay Birch has won a third of her outings over fences and is easily the most experienced chaser in the field. Matt’s son, Stan guided her to three victorious from her final four outings last season, including a fantastic nine-length triumph in the Mares’ Challenger Series Final at Haydock at the end of April.

Sean Bowen guided The Bay Birch into battle on her reappearance and the bookies gave the 20/1 outsider little chance. Yet, under a fine front-running ride, Sheppard stable star jumped brilliantly from the front, surviving an error at the last to hold Caid Du Lin at arm’s length and get the win.

The Bay Birch won twice over three miles last season and enjoys a little extra juice in the ground. Stan Sheppards’ mount sits some 20 pounds ahead of Annie Angel in the ratings and five pounds clear of Atalanta Ablaze, who also conceded four extra pounds. The Bay Birch is by far the best chaser in this race. Anything around Evens or better is an absolute steal.
