OUR SURPRISE ran better than the bare result when finishing third behind Kyntara at Warwick on his debut for Harry Fry at Warwick last month and the Jeremy gelding can get off the mark now making his first start over hurdles.
A winner between the flags prior to joining this yard he possibly just found the heavy ground against him late on in what was his first outing in almost four months and he should come on for that effort which will surely have sharpened him up.
Better ground also could help and the yard continue in fair form so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him running well here on his hurdles debut and he could go close.
2:15 Newcastle – QuinnBet Live Casino Handicap Chase (Qualifier For The Northern Lights Staying Chase Series) Cl4 (5yo+ 0-110) 2m7½f
FLAMBOYANT JOYEAUX could be worth chancing to bounce back having disappointed over hurdles when last seen; but Sue Smith’s charge had shaped with some promise over fences prior to that run where he had twice made the frame in starts at Sedgefield and Catterick.
The Crossharbour gelding finished runner-up on the latter occasion behind Discko Des Plages, beaten five lengths and having a subsequent two-time winner behind him.
Still relatively unexposed as a chaser he returns to the larger obstacles for this outing and if the step up in trip unlocks some improvement then he might be able to get back to winning ways and add to his sole hurdles success.
2:40 Exeter – Join Racing TV Now Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl3 (5yo+ 0-135) 3m
AYE AYE CHARLIE was a decent hurdler, winning at Kelso before tackling Graded races which included the Albert Bartlett Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival where he finished eighth behind Minella Indo.
Things didn’t go to plan for the Midnight Legend gelding over fences last term and she failed to complete on her final two starts of her novice campaign. But back from wind surgery this term she’s run much better and has made the frame on both her starts.
Third latest at Newcastle when beaten ten lengths behind The Ferry Master it might be worth chancing Fergal O’Brien’s charge to get off the mark in this discipline having been eased slightly in the weights and this perhaps isn’t quite as strong as the races he’s contested this term.
3:20 Newcastle – QuinnBet Handicap Chase Cl3 (5yo+ 0-140) 2m7½f
Both of SHE’S A SUPERMACK’s chase wins have come at this venue and the Arakan mare is taken to get back on the winning trail.
Ian Jardine’s charge struck her last win back in December, scoring over course and distance with a defeat of Catamaran Du Seuil and she subsequently didn’t lose a great deal in defeat when stepped up into a Class 2 contest at Uttoxeter latest.
Although she failed to beat a rival home in that four-runner contest she didn’t help her cause by jumping poorly and she may find the return to calmer waters more to her liking along with the better ground.
Also stepping up in trip could prove a good move and with many of her rivals in this contest arriving with something to prove she might be worth sticking with given her record here and being in arguably better form.
4:40 Southwell – Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap Cl5 (4yo+ 0-70) 5f
PASSIONAL is building up a decent record at this venue and Stuart Williams’ charge is taken to get back on the winning trail.
The Footstepsinthesand filly has won for times for this yard since switching from Simon Crisford, recording one of those wins over this course and distance with her latest coming at Chelmsford in February with a defeat of It Must Be Faith.
She was last seen finishing runner-up to Smokey over this course and distance where she was denied by a neck and a repeat of that effort could be good enough to see her return to the winners’ enclosure with the consistent filly likely to give another good account.
6:40 Southwell – Bombardier Handicap Cl4 (4yo+ 0-85) 1m
JEWEL MAKER took really well to this surface last month, readily beating Asdaa by just over one length but Tim Easterby’s charge looked good value for more having travelled powerfully through the contest.
The Invincible Spirit gelding had won twice previously at Newcastle during December and he acquitted himself well in defeat prior to resuming winning ways latest where he appeared well suited by the strong pace which he’ll surely get again here.
He’s only been pushed up 4lbs for that success which still leaves him with scope given he was rated higher in Ireland previously and he ought to go well once more turned out again on this surface on which he’s unexposed despite this being a slightly stronger race.
