TUESDAY RACING BEST BETS – TIPS FOR TAUNTON, WETHERBY & NEWCASTLE
1:00 Taunton – British EBF Mares’ ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle (EBF Mares’ NH Novices’ Series Qual’) (GBB Race) Cl4 (4yo+) 2m3f
ALAVINA won a Market Rasen bumper last March and was thought good enough to contest a Listed bumper on her reappearance where the Getaway mare wasn’t disgraced in finishing fourth behind Ishkhara Lady.
Since switching to hurdles Olly Murphy’s charge found only one too good on his debut over timber at Fakenham behind a subsequent winner but she made no mistake at the second attempt when beating Belle De Manech at Fontwell last month.
She showed heavy ground to be no problem that day while she also survived a mistake at the last before keeping on well and there could be more improvement to come with this step up in trip expected to suit so it wouldn’t be a shock to see her firmly in the mix in this contest and she can follow up that last-time win.
2:30 Taunton – Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) Cl2 (4yo+) 2m½f
PIC D’ORHY was a smart hurdler in France prior to joining Paul Nicholls and the lightly raced Turgeon gelding was thrown to the wolves on his debut for Ditcheat when immediately tried in the 2019 Triumph Hurdle during the Cheltenham Festival.
Perhaps unsurprisingly he failed to cut much ice and he struggled to get competitive in subsequent starts before springing something of a shock when winning last season’s Betfair Hurdle, beating Ciel De Neige by three-parts of a length.
He’s been highly tried over fences this season but with little success, finishing fourth to Allart when last seen at Ascot and he returns to hurdles here from a very workable mark just 4lbs higher than when posting his Newbury win.
Wind surgery in the interim since his last run could unlock some improvement and still with the potential to do better as a hurdler he can give weight and a beating to this field if he were somehow able to replicate the form of his Newbury success. He might be worth chancing to do so and while this is competitive he can go close.
2:45 Wetherby – Sixt Car Hire Handicap Hurdle (Northern Lights Two Mile Hurdle Series Qualifier) Cl4 (4yo+ 0-110) 2m
LLANTARA won three times over hurdles for Tom Symonds prior to a switch to this yard and the Kayf Tara mare can get back on the scoresheet having delivered a trio of good efforts for new handler Alistair Ralph.
He’s made the frame on all three starts, most recently going down by less than one length behind Committee Of One and while he’s been pushed up 1lb he has the services of Bryan Carver here whose 3lbs claim is noteworty and he’s handicapped to go well as a consequence.
Assuming he can continue his good recent spell of form then there appears no reason why he shouldn’t be involved again at the finish and he could get back on the winning trail here from a mark he’s won from before in the past.
3:20 Wetherby – Racing TV In Stunning HD Handicap Chase (Northern Lights Middle Distance Chase Series Qualifier) Cl4 (5yo+ 0-120) 2m5½f
Cybalko is thriving at present and difficult to discount but ECEPARTI has been running better than his bare form figures suggest and Venetia Williams’ charge can get back to winning ways.
The Enrique gelding scored her last career win over this course and distance back in November 2019 having struck previously at Chepstow and he went on to fill the frame in three of his next four starts without adding to his tally.
That trend has continued this term and he was last seen finishing fourth to Echo Watt at Bangor where he was beaten around eleven lengths, keeping on at one pace and no match for the winner.
The handicapper has cut him some further slack however and he’s only 2lbs higher than his last winning mark which allied to a return to this course and distance could see him bounce back to winning form for a yard that does quite well with its’ runners at the track.
3:40 Taunton – Elise Jones Virtual Delayed 18th Birthday Mares’ Handicap Hurdle Cl5 (4yo+ 0-100) 3m
FOLLOW THAT stepped up on previous efforts when switched to the handicap ranks for the first time at this venue last month and the Malinas mare caught the eye doing some good late work which suggests she might be suited by this further step up in distance.
Olly Murphy’s charge found only one too good on that last occasion where she was beaten just over three lengths behind Spirit Of Rome and racing from only 1lb higher in the weights the step up to three miles could unlock some further improvement.
This doesn’t look a particularly strong race and if she can build on that better effort last time then she could go one place better here to open her account assuming she sees out the longer trip.
5:10 Newcastle – Betway Novice Stakes Cl5 (4yo+) 1m2f
YANKEE STADIUM has had a few attempts to get off the mark, failing to strike for Aidan O’Brien but posting some good efforts in defeat and the Galileo gelding has continued in similar vein since joining George Scott for whom he has made the frame on both starts at Chelmsford and Wolverhampton.
He was last seen finishing just over one length adrift of Byford at the latter named venue earlier in the month, while the form of his earlier third on his debut for this yard has been boosted by the runner-up.
Despite being the most experienced and possibly exposed of this field he does set a decent standard and there could yet be more to come from him over this longer trip.
6:40 Newcastle – Bombardier British Hopped Amber Beer Handicap Cl2 (4yo+) 7f
EDRAAK hasn’t been the most consistent in his relatively few forays onto the racecourse and since making his debut for Owen Burrows back in September 2019 he’s raced just six times which has yielded a pair of wins here and at Chelmsford latest when returning from six months off.
He had three lengths to spare on that occasion from Huraiz, keeping on strongly from off the pace to register a cosy success and he gave the impression that there might be more improvement still in the locker to come out.
The Elzaam gelding will need to step up again if he’s to defy an 8lbs rise in the weights in a better class of race, but there’s likely better to come and the return to seven furlongs shouldn’t prove an issue. Proven on this surface it isn’t hard to think he can get involved and no surprise to see the low-mileage and unexposed sort going close in this contest.
